To fix, or not to fix?

Betty threw a rod out the front of her engine on Thursday night. The boy's at Mt Eden say it's too expensive to repair, and that my best bet is to replace the engine if I want to keep the bike runniing.

Now should I replace the engine, or flick the bike off on tradme and find a new ride?

Replacing the egine is the cheaper option, but with the bike being 20 years old, things are starting to wear out. That is if I can track down an engine.

Selling the bike on trademe as a non-going but WOFed and regoed bike then means that I have to replace it, and i would spend a bit to get something from the 90's.

I'd appreciate options from people out there.

To be honest, i'm not sure what the bike would be worth with/without engine. If you can do the job yourself then i'm guessing it's probably worth it, however, if you have to pay someone else to do it then flick it....

How bout shoehorning a zx6r engine in there???

Do a cosmetic job on the hole in the engine then tidy and polish Betty up and mount her on a (strong) coffee table and sit her in the middle of the lounge to be admired.

Na, get a new one, for the hassle and cost you will have spent a lot of money on an old bike and you wont know the history of the motor you get.
I’ve fitted a motor in a car only to find it was in worse condition than the one I had removed!
The $1500 can go on a nice new toy that doesn’t need new shocks, link bushes, steering head bearings, clutch, wheel bearings, 2nd gear...
Of course you can keep the old one as a project for rainy weekends!

I'd like to see you on a new ride Wonko! If you are prepared to spend the money and the cirumstances are right I say sell old Betty and get yourself on a later model sprotsbike!!

New bike I reckon, even tho the blood isnt even dry on my forehead in this bike world, thinking from cars etc, if little bits are shaggin out it's just going to nag at ya later on.

Had a ring about. most places saying that I will be looking $500 - $700. Then there is putting it in and not knowing how well it's going to run. So it looks like I'm going to get a new bike.

Anyone got a 2004 636 for sale under $4000??

I guess it would come down to.. How much is it worth as it is,verses how much going again with the cost of another engine.If it was me and the finances allowed,i would get another bike and put the GPZ in the corner until an engine at the right price came up...if there is no sentiment involved then it may be a time to move on to something else and not worry about the present sale value.
