He was a really good bike handler. Held good presence on the road.

But Ride Forever and CBTA are very structured, and if you haven't done one if the courses, especially Bronze or Silver, you'd likely have no idea of the concepts involved.

I wouldn't say he was incompetent. Just unstructured.
