I raced against him on a grass track at Waterholes Road in Canterbury sometime in the late 60's, he was always interested in what other people rode and was great at providing tips; he probably wasn't the same with people on the professional circuit. In that article it says he last raced in 1986 but was Australasian champion in 1997, quite an achievement.

Distantly related (very) BUT without a doubt the best Speedway rider of any era. Professional and talented... GOAT indeed...

We used to love going out and watching those tests back in the day. Brushing the shale off your clothes and the smell of castrol R and methanol.

The youngest of the big three - Moore, Briggs and Mauger.

Certainly the right one for the later professional era. Did a lot behind the scenes for NZ speedway too.
He'll be missed.

saw him years ago racing at Forbury Park in Dunedin, it must have been some sort of exibition race as there was big trail bikes and even a Triumph in the race, by the time the pack was at the first bend the speedway bikes were finishing

Saw him at Forbury and Te Marua. He was a professionals professional, and made it look so easy

Read an interesting comment that originated from a former team mate in the UK. Mauger always offered this team mate first choice of lane, no other rider had ever done that. Eventually the guy asked why, Mauger replied to the effect that when he went to the world final he wasn't going to get first choice so he'd better be used to it.

I think that was the longtrack bikes. They are a bit different to a proper speedway bike but yeah there was a demo series with flat trackers and even a few XR750's...

I had a Hagon longtrack bike that we used on grass for a bit... Freakin terrifying thing... Although if you really want to kack your panties have a go on a speedway bike. The wall is very close and you get a real sensation of speed you don't get in an open paddock...
