Is that the one from the aluminium bike ? Last time I looked at that it was the same. Job for the apprentice I suspect.
I've seen pics of a bevel Ducati with grooves instead of the drillings. Even more time intensive.

Is that a mag or just points/distributor sitting where the starter motor would go ?

I recall, during the early eighties, seeing a GS1000 engine in a sidecar where someone had lightened it by drilling the engine number.

I don't know if it is true or not, but my understanding was Pops Yoshimuras wife did the drilling on the engines??

i think you'll find it's for increased surface area, each drilling more than doubles the surface area of that circle.

    For cooling?

That's some dedication - I'd bolt on a larger oil cooler.

Dimple drilling was what it used to be called.
Worshiping the gods of speed requires a lot of dedication from some.
Cameron did a whole article on some of the false gods.

Back in the 30-50s they used to acid dip car panels.
here is most of it geeze I found that quick.

the bike was built in nz and sent over to the world formula one championship, the team already had dedication so that wasn't a problem....
