Best upgrade you could do is to sell that hateful thing and buy a Hayabusa.

You want to be looking cool ... and so you then bought a GN ... ???

they are as cool as they'll ever be already ...

If you doubt this ... go back to the moped ...

Hey GNs are a factory chopper man! Why would you change that???

Seriously, leave it the way it is and ride it hard.

As others have said, save your money for the next bike. Keep the GN legal and roadworthy, ride it and learn. By the time you're off the R you'll be ready for something bigger...

In case the OP is still around...

+1 to change the bars, if it's got the chopper styled handlebars then going to flat or dirtbike bars will improve the bike hugely.

Check your tyres too. If they're older than 5 years (date of manufacture code on the sidewall - google it), change them even if they've still got tread, the rubber will have gone hard and will let go on you if you're pushing it.

Catch up on deferred maintenance, restore original performance (such as it is), get the bike to that clean tidy and well maintained state of things where you can count on it.

Personally I'd stop at that point, but having issues with OCD I can understand if you'd get the bug and want to keep on going... but no matter what you spend on it, it's a GN. It'll always be a GN.

Just about anything in the modern LAMs category will leave the GN standing. It's your bike of course and your call, but at this point I'd be saving for the next bike, getting tools as I needed them, doing the Ride Forever courses, getting riding gear like good boots etc.

Is that your way of saying "you can't polish a turd"?

GNs are OK though. If someone wanted to give me one I'd take it. I'd just put good tyres on it and away I'd go.
