On that subject, I sat in the passenger seat some weeks back while my daughter drove back to Dunedin. She has a 1999 Toyota Corolla 1.8 auto. Darn thing got smack on 6.0 l per 100 kms on that trip.
Obviously mainly due to her driving ability - well done.

I've been looking very carefully at them myself. I have a decent commuter bike and have been going down the mid-drive Bafang BB02 route with a 48V battery.... yes it will be more than 300W, and no I'm not too stressed about it.

Drove my first electric car a couple weeks back too. It was great. Perfect as a town car... so much so that I am seriously considering one.

Cool! My mate said that he got a peak top speed of 45 km/hr on the flat from his yesterday. It would hardly attract unwanted attention, especially where we live 😁.

At the last IAM conference, I got to ride a Scott electric pedal-assist bike which was really impressive. Also drove a Nissan Leaf and the Renault equivalent. It was the torque off the line which impressed the heck out of me. One of the Wellington members has a Tesla. It's hellishly expensive but has serious performance and range, despite the odd bit of adverse press.

As a side note, Ebikes over 300w seem to not be able to be insured. And a bit touch and go on lower powered ones.

Personally, if I was overtaking traffic on the hard shoulder/in the same lane, on the downhill.. I'd definitely want leathers.. Well, anything more than some lycra and a polystyrene skull-cap. I've got no beef with cyclists, most of the ones down here are alright at sharing the road and being reasonable, but far-out, I wouldn't go on the road, in traffic, in the stupid silly thin 'gear' they wear!

    THIS is more like it..

As a dare I once rode a race pushy at full tilt (for much fitter 20 yo me). Even without the other protection that's about as close to heat exhaustion as I ever want to get.
