I've experienced the same and thought they were just adding extra mark-up on the shipping. It turns out that a lot of companies buy in to use a shipping company. They get a cut-price shipping deal since this bigger company can negotiate cheaper rates than what the seller could usually get. The customer gets shagged over, as per normal.
I've asked companies to just ship via USPS but they refuse as their "company policy" is already set in stone.
I want to use surface mail at some locations... "not an available option" is the standard reply.

I've mentioned shipito.com before. They *can* cost more than others, but they offer every freight co from USPS (slow, take your chances) to Fedex (next day if you want to pay).
I haven't had any issues getting parts from USA with Shipito.
