Certainly one can find a (fairly small) number of genuine unreconstructed racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes, and such, and they deserve to be scorned. But far more often, the "offender" has had a momentary brain fade, a moment of clumsiness, or is genuinely socially inept (a problem for a lot of us, related to shyness, and seemingly inborn), or was trying to make a joke. Unless and until you are sure the offender is intentionally malicious, consider these other possibilities and cut the guy a little slack. But that doesn't happen here. Especially on college campuses, and especially among younger generations, people have become hypersenitive to imagined slights. Indeed, claims to have been disrespected and worse seem to be a badge of honor in a country which has come to a point where victimhood has become a status symbol . . . often with legal and political support. Where historical racism, and the related isms, was despicable and is embarrassing even to those of us who were never part of it, today's exquisite hypersensitivity to insult and bragging about victimhood is pathetic, something for a society of weaklings.
