    Retail stores for helmets

    Hi Everyone.

I am pretty new to the Kiwi biking scene and have just completed my basic handling course.

I intend to pick up a BMW 310 GS this week for my LAMS journey.

    I used to own a F800.

I have been struggling to find a few places that are retail in Auckland to fit and try some helmets.

I went to the Expo yesterday and had no luck and then went to Motomail this morning to try on more. I must have tried on 15 lids but none of them felt right.

I was hoping someone can point me in the direction of a few big retail outlets that have a large selection for me to go to? There are heaps online, but that doesnt really help if you are still at the fitting stage.

    Thanks!

Well, you have experienced one of Auckland's largest.
Perhaps tomorrow monting you may like to proceed to Colemans to try their selection, or over to Barry's Point Rd on the Nth Shore and try the selection offered by the dealers there, or even cut out the middle man and go to Cycletreads?

Really .... did someone in the shop help you? That's a lot of helmets to try given between the brands you'll only be one of two differing sizes.

If you can't find something at Motomail, then Shoei and Arai aren't for you, or the salesperson didn't understand either product range well.

Techmoto would be worth a visit as they stock a couple of other brands. Coleman's also as they have a good selection of HJC helmets.

Try different brands, not just different models. I fit AGV (didn't up until a few years ago), Shoei, and HJC. My mother fits Shark and Arai, it really pays to try the different brands but annoyingly that often means visiting multiple outlets/dealers as most only have contracts for two or three

Arai claim to be able to fit any head size and shape with their sets of helmet padding. You don't have to just take what is on the shelf.

    Cheers

Yes, a salesman helped me out. Of the 15, I found three that felt good. He mentioned that all three were slightly loose around the temples. He suggested that I carry on looking.

For the record, I was not brand or style specific and was working in a budget of under $1200. My only requirement was a drop down sun visor.

    This was a great tip.

I went to Techmoto and found a XLite X1004 Ultra Carbon that was absolutely perfect.

The guys at Techmoto were great. I also picked up a nice Spidi jacket as well.

    Thanks for the tip.

I went there to try the XLites but they didn't fit my head shape, whereas a couple of the Shoei models are a perfect fit.

Pleased you found something. The best helmet is always the one that fits properly.
