Gidday Shane from just a couple of km away Since we last rode together, the Blackbird has gone, the Street Triple has gone and it's now a GSX-S 1000! It would soon be a Street Triple 765 RS if the Chief Executive approved

Enjoy your ride, massive tourist traffic yesterday.

    Cheers,

    Geoff

Hi Geff. Seen the blackbird posts and guest it was you. Still got my Hayabusa and still going strong. Just seeing if the Kiwi bikers ride or not. I don't mind riding by my self. Cheers, Shane

Enjoy the ride - wet in the morning, fine in the afternoon. I prefer to ride either solo or people I trust (like you - it's been far too long!)

    clockwise or anticlockwise, any suggestions?

    Include Whangamata or not?

Any places to stop/look at on the way?

I prefer anticlockwise meself. Not sure why...

If you come in from Waikato, include Whangamata. If from d'Auckland, I'd go over Kopu and head anticlockwise north from there. Really, it's up to you. How much time you have, how much gas you want to burn etc etc.

    Have a good ride!

Clockwise is better if you want to stop and take photos. It also puts you on the outside of roads like the coast road north of Thames so may be safer.

But I always go the other way for some reason.

I prefer clockwise too but for someone who actually lives overlooking Coromandel Harbour, I almost never ride the Loop! Spend most of my time coaching in the central Waikato or South Auckland so the Coro-Thames coast road is the only bit I use regularly. Having said that, got a social ride tomorrow round the Southern Loop with some of the IAM team - yay !

Eldog...... there's a lot to see on the Coro Peninsula as well as just the riding aspect and you might want to look at a few of the dedicated Coromandel websites first to see what's on offer. If this is going to be a "first" for you, you could split it up into the Northern Loop on one ride and do the Southern Loop on another. After that, you can do more exploring. Also, bear in mind that from now on, tourist traffic starts to grow until the end of summer. Even now, weekend traffic can take some of the fun away but weekdays are comparatively light if you can sneak a mid-week ride in.

Yes, the traffic isn't too bad after these holidays until early December. But forget it after that until February.

anticlockwise it was from dÁuckland, as suggested
not much traffic, which was unexpected.
stopped in Whitianga, missed Whangamata (overrated in my view) took in Coromandel Town and back down the windy coast and

    almost ran out of fuel

two days of nice pootling along

took in some sights and several times let fellow bikers go first

Might go for another pootle sometime over the break.

I did most of the Southern Loop today, Labour weekend Sunday. Auckland to Kopu, round to Paeroa, then back to Auckland through Tahuna and Te Kauwhata because I can't cope with the 90 km/h section of SH2 twice in one day.

Not much traffic, except for a line of about 30 cars after the fun part of 25A from Kopu. Passed 1 ute going over the hill to Whangamata and maybe 5 vehicles on the road to Waihi. Clearest run I've had for a long time.

The new back tyre looks almost scrubbed in now.

I've got a day off on Weds (May 29) and thought I'd try the Coromandel loop for the first time on my ST1100.

Starting from Hamilton, I'll probably do the Northern loop (as I want to see someone in Coromandel on the way through).

Any idea how much time the round trip will take ?

So you'd start at Kopu and finish at Thames? That's about 3 hours riding, maybe longer on a ST1100.

If you're doing it for the first time, take your time. There are a few tight, twisty sections on the northern loop, and there will be damp patches in the shade. Especially the climb from Kopu. Don't be too late leaving Coromandel Town as the sunstrike can be wicked over the hill going south.

I liked the anticlockwise route, expect wet roads after Kopu end, but I doubt you will ride from Hamilton that way. Fairly good roads north to Whitianga, then before you get to Coromandel, stop at the top lookout, keep an eye out when crossing the road.

try and get to Coromandel for lunch is nice. There are quite a few nice short rides from here if you like scenic spots.

on the way back keep your eyes open as the road narrows and the usual auckland drivers don’t give way, with their SUVs towing boats or camper vans. Be alert.

once you have done it, I am sure you would want to do it again.

did this on the last 1KC leaving early in the morning, it was a beaut ride.
