I've recently purchased a late 90s BMW R1150 GS. Great bike - always wanted one and finally got one.
One of my first jobs is to replace the battery. I'd love to get an fancy new lithium battery like an Ultrabatt but they're stupidly expensive - so I've ordered a Motobatt AGM to replace the Yuasa 51913 open-cell that was in the bike.
I'm under no illusions about the quality of the Motobatt but I'd like it to last as long as possible. Normally I'd connect/disconnect the terminals if I knew I wouldn't be riding for a few weeks or longer, but that's a hassle on the R1150 GS because the battery terminals are under the fuel tank. So I'm thinking about installing a discrete battery isolater switch like you see on trucks & buses.
Will isolating the battery cause any problems to the bike? The service manual says that the onboard Bosch/Motronic engine management module will lose its memory when you disconnect the power (apparently it tweaks the operating parameters as it "learns" from the engine) but I can't find an information about what this will mean in practice.
Any advice or feedback would be appreciated. Please tell me if I'm about to do something dumb.
