It’s reported that Peter Fonda has died aged 79 of lung cancer. Easy Rider never struck me as all *that* great, but then the list of great motorcycle movies is not long.

I was a kid at Primary school and my parents wouldn't let me see that evil bikie gang, hippy, druggie, movie when it came out. We had to sneak off to see it behind our parents back.
You couldn't describe Peter Fonda as a great actor or anything outstanding but lucky for us a young stoned Peter Fonda did scrounge up a few bucks to make a movie with a few mates in a van on the cheap and gave us an iconic movie. I love Easy Rider. The music still appeals, the choppers still have visual appeal - the Captain America bike set the standard for every chopper since. Shit who in their right mind would want to ride one of the original bikes. Fonda and Hopper admitted years later that they were crap to ride and hurt like hell above 30mph. Most of the cool scenes are filmed at slow speeds because they couldn't take the spine shattering jolts. But the look said it all- cool on a new level of coolness. Jack Nicholson may never have gotten into movies if it hadn't been for Easy Rider. Of course it would have been even better if he had persuaded his sister Jane to do some nudie scenes. ps- Lets throw in a gratuitous Jane picture.
RIP and thank you Mr Fonda

Ahh. Barbarella.
You know? I really like boobies.
What were we talking about?
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
Cool as it may have been in it's day, it is lame now. IMO.
But yeah, Jane Fonda had it going on! Barbarella was also lame, apparently!....
Only a Rat can win a Rat Race!
Just a shame it wasn't his sister.

So what ARE the other iconic motorbike films?
"Shout! Shout! Let the clutch out!" Gears for Fears
The unforgettable " I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle"
Motivated me to buy a Commando and its had it fangs into my wallet for some years.
Stone was another
Note: no German style helmets, early adopters across the Tasman.
Oddly I owned a Kawasaki 1000 for a while too.
DeMyer's Laws - an argument that consists primarily of rambling quotes isn't worth bothering with.
"The Motorcycle Diaries" about the young Ernesto (Che) Guevara touring South America on his Norton.
(B&W Spanish with subtitles, just thought I should add that.)
"Freebird" an amusing, drug addled adventure in Wales.
"Quadrophenia" which I've never seen, but wouldn't mind.

The Worlds Fastest Indian should be there too. Think about what it did for a general audience.
edit: here's a BFI list. I would absolutely watch a movie called PSYCHOMANIA

Barbarella is unwatchable self indulgent drivel. It doesn't work as porn, notwithstanding copious nudity (Jane Fonda is sort of attractive but way too skinny for my taste) and she is a terrible wooden actress with an awful accent. I fucking loathe that film, and hippies in general.
As for EASY RIDER? is it art? is it a bikersploitation flick (like WILD ANGELS)? is it some hippie statement? Is it trying to be all those things? Jack Nicholson leaves no piece of scenery unchewed, the psychedelic scenes in the New Orleans cemetary are pointless (and had to be included after Dennis spent all the budget on drugs and bought back zero otherwise usable footage - so much for your second location crew).
Its OK but I dont understand that hype.
I am much more of a fan of Zabriskie Point or Vanishing Point. Plus naked Gilda Texter in Vanishing Point is far superior to any Jane Fonda
