    Thinks.

    Take away religion and set all the current participants "free" - what would our (crime?) statistics etc etc look like?

    Then again with nowhere to hide -

    Says the site's religious zealot. . .

    Well I'm not sure if the sun is a God as such, but it was welcome as it came out to warm us and keep the roads dry. Although there was a short burst of vengeance, and clouds doth appear, then hail. But the sun returnuth and all was well again as we got closer to Masterton.

    yes old school here, bought my original big Weber in 1985 in Austruckinfailure, throw a leg of pork on it every xmas (and every time I do a roast). So its 35 years old now ! I've been to group BBq's where there have been 4 of the buggers cooking at once....

    No gas and idiot proof, light it with plenty of fire lighters (the hardest bit !) let it burn off and then throw in the meat. Don't even look at it or raise the lid, after 3 hrs hey presto the perfect pork leg roasted.

    You'd never go hungry with Nigella Gaz.
    If it weren't for flashbacks...I'd have no memory at all..

    Merry Christmas and happy new year to all, non believers, agnostic and atheists alike...
    May god guide you safely through slovenly greed of packed shopping malls of greed and shepherd you through the back streets to hide your beveragic sins on the holy day.

    Are you talking north vs Southern hemisphere? There are plenty of Northern hemisphere traditions we have inherited at the wrong time of year and Christmas is just one of the pagen rituals treated thus.

    -------------

    "
    According to the Philocalian Calendar of 354 a.d., December 25 memorialized the birth of the deity Sol Invictus, the “Unconquerable Sun.” This aptly coincided with the Roman celebration of the winter solstice, the day in which the sun’s apex is closest to the horizon.3 The feast, moreover, fell right within the broader context of Saturnalia, a mid-December revelry in honor of the god Saturn, which lasted a month and included — among other festivities — gift-giving, a common practice in our present holiday season.

    Most historians have concluded that the Church decreed that Christmas would be held on December 25 in order to extirpate — or rather baptize — the Roman festival. The ecclesial authorities would have had good reasons for doing so, as many of these pagan holidays enticed the Christian faithful to participate. A Syriac manuscript from the 1100s records the dilemma: “It was a custom of the Pagans to celebrate on the same December 25 the birthday of the Sun, at which they kindled lights in token of festivity. In these solemnities and revelries, the Christians also took part.

    “Accordingly, when the doctors of the Church perceived that the Christians had a leaning to this festival, they took counsel and resolved that the true Nativity should be solemnized on that day.”4 Thus, the day honoring the god of the sun would soon be eclipsed by the Son of God; or, as St. Augustine put it, “We hold this day holy, not like the pagans because of the birth of the sun, but because of him who made it.”

    The early Church eventually formalized Natalis Christi in 350 a.d. under Pope Julius I.

    Neither northern nor southern.

    Like this...

    Christmas = birth
    Easter = resurrection

    I note the various news organisations using the word "allegedly." He's actually recorded saying the words. "I'll get the boys to blow it up."
    The legal pussy footing seems superfluous.

    If the Government has been giving Destiny the courtesies accruing to a church, that should be reconsidered. Violence in pursuit of a political goal is the definition of terrorism.

    100% in agreement Pritch. Your last sentence was going to be part of my next post in Jacinda thread about how she will pussyfoot around this because the wrong race is involved and no guns. He should be treated same as the chch import and ALL destiny locations should be undergoing ruatoki style swat team raids.

    Allegedly is a standard international journalism convention regardless of how obviously evident something is. Plus you never know what technicality he might get off on and NZ has some peculiarities around defamation law, you can get in trouble for saying something here even if it is true.
