Buying a motorcycle in NZ on a tourist visa? (British)

    Hi,

I'm looking at a 4 week trip to NZ in Feb/March and looking at rental companies the prices are insane.

I'm thinking I could buy a bike on TradeMe and then sell it before I leave without much hassle. Worst case scenario, I lose the same amount that a rental would have cost me anyway.

Are there any complications with a non-resident buying a motorcycle on a tourist visa?

    Registration?
    Insurance?
    Road Tax?
    Documentation?

If anybody can give me any advice on the above issues that would be great

I'm just about to book the flights as soon as I can iron this out.

    Thanks!

Registration? You'll need a NZ address. PM me if you want to use mine.

Insurance? Not compulsory but a good idea.

Road Tax? Known as Rego, varies on size of engine but should be on bike when you buy it. WOF (MOT) should be less than 30 days old when you buy a bike.

Documentation? Nothing else really, I assume you have a full UK license?

Have a look here for prices in various locations.

The quiet scares me cause it screams the truth.

    Amazing thank you!

Flights are booked - I just need to make a trademe account and find something to buy! There was a perfect MT09 tracer on there yesterday but it has sold!

Thanks for the address offer! I wish things were that easy here in the UK!

One other thing to consider - some bike shops will negotiate a buy back price for people in your exact situation. So, you can sell the bike back to them at the end of your trip with minimal fuss and at an agreed price. If you have a specific bike in mind, you could potentially get in touch with some local dealers and see if anyone is open to such an agreement.
