    WTB: 2nd hand 2T Enduro KDX200, Gasgas 200/250 or similar

    Keen to get into some off road trail riding etc. Looking for a KDX200 or similar 2 stroke. Around Otago but can travel Invercargill/Chch to pickup the right one.

    Suggest spread the net to Gasgas, 200, 250, 300. Often good value for older ones and a step up from the venerable KDX.

    Two Five should get you a 250, but dont look past a 200, they are great.

    Of course old dirtbikes have been owned by monkeys so there will be a bleed of money sorting them out.
    My only regret was I waited till 30 to get into them.

    Basket case DT200 was miles better than $40 basketcase GP125 with knobblies.

    KDX was a world better. Than someone gave me a ride on a GG200. Then I had to own one.

    Then a couple of mates were converted. One bought a 300. And I had to have one of those after a ride.

    Anything in particular I should look out for when buying these old dirtbikes? Bike shop said avoid any 4strokes without clear service history, but that's fine I'm tending 2T anyway. They also said it might need some love, but everything is replaceable, various bearings, pegs, etc. I was thinking about going to look at this this weekend: https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Lis...?id=2515407684

    KDX look pretty good.

    Oh god. The actual one.
    That looks just like my 2002 200
    What a fantastic bike that was. I'd still have it I'd I hadn't ridden the 300 which was just as great but with way more bottom end and midrange and low end did I mention top end,?
    But that's not a fair comparison.

    Had a good chat with the owner of the yellow Gasgas. He said the kill switch doesn't work (I figure that's fixable), it probably needs the piston replaced (He did it ~10 years/2000kms ago), and he's been running it on AVgas at 30:1 so might need some tuning to run on 95. I'm pretty tempted by it.

    300cc - Is this a better option for me as a new-to-dirt? Or should I go with the smaller (lighter?) 200?

    Not yellow though!

    That's what I replaced the 200 with, an 07 300 about 10 years ago. I still have it and intend on keeping it. I'd buy that in a flash if I somehow needed a replacement.

    Check the plating on the forks, they do wear and the may be some loss of plating but if its smooth it should be ok. Expect wheel bearings and chain and sprockets, brake pads to be consumable, there will be some play in rear linkage but too much means another bearing kit. Most of what you need is on MXparts.co.nz quite cheaply. Even pistons and conrods.

    The 300 is a real pussycat and will be as easy to ride and start as the 200, it felt just as light which surprised me. Yes there is more top end but you hardly need to go there. Jetting isca bit rich and a new needle worth about $20 from the right place will clean the power range up so it feels linear. Lots of advice on GasGas riders forum.

    Turns out the seller has two 07 EC300 bikes for sale:

    Bike 1
    The trade me one is probably the tidier, the motor is stock and on original piston. It has a DEP front pipe and silencer
    { with a slight dent), Sachs rear shock and Marzocchi forks

    Bike 2
    The other one has had a recent new piston and new FMF front pipe. It has Ohlins rear shock and the same Marzocchi forks
    They both have the original handbooks and radiator guards.



    Any real difference? Bike 2 looks a lot more scuffed up, plastics etc.

    Hard to tell. The ohlins shock is always nice, but go on condition and price should be fine.
