    Thumbs up NZ tour 06

Hey everyone, long time reader first time poster (you know how it goes).

A mate and I have been planning a kind of 'long way round' tour of NZ and are wanting feedback and directions from anyone here who has done the NZ tour.

We're taking two pretty much new 250s (GSX & VTR). I pick up my VTR on wednesday this week (man I can't wait). We've both been riding for quite a few years so we're not new to this.

We're planning on going around late January and accomodation will be tenting and what ever else we should stumble upon. We're going to head north first and then head south. Currently we're thinking go down one side come up the other.

Feedback and advice would be much appreciated as we haven't done anything this big before.

Welcome to the site. The full tour of NZ is a great ride, and there are so many options.

If this is your first tour of this nature then I would suggest that you limit your rides to around 3 - 400 km each day, and so give your selves time at each stop for sight seeing etc. On some of the more remote sections, fill your tanks at every opportunity. This is especially important around the East Cape and from Murchison to Wanaka down the West Coast.

Look up as many KBers as you can for local information, and just enjoy your ride.
    Time to ride

Thanks for the feedback mate. I forgot to add, we're starting from Auckland and we're allowing ourselves 3 weeks so we can stop and see the sites and generally play up.

Good stuff, did something similar a couple of years ago. And I plan I repeating it next year, probably leave Wellington on/around the 23rd of Jan to tour around the SI for a couple of weeks. Maybe I'll see you around then.

Umm.. The people on the ferry don't tie up your bike for you.. Umm.. Yeah that's it, be careful :-)

Thanks mate, the guys at Motomail said exactly the same thing about the ferry and suggested that we take tie downs with us. Bloody crazy really.

a few of us are nurturing the idea of touring the south island for a week or two. More just for the open roads than anything else... plan is to go as far south as Queenstown at the moment. No route has been selected as of yet.

This is for the last week or two in february so perhaps you could tag along, but we will all be on 600's

We're planning on going to extremes....ie heading north first and hitting cape rianga (sp) and stuart island down south. Hey, why not!
