Done that 2 days in a row last big trip.... It isnt so much the arse, it is the mind that gets a workout. 450miles is 720km. The 450mile day took me 9hours, but I was sitting at open road 80mph (120kmh) most of the day, very few towns etc to go through. Rarely had to do any windy roads or anything.

The previous day was 440miles and I did it in 10hours, along roads much more similar to what you are doing, with very few stops (fuel but no sitting around, plus a reasonable lunch stop). I was doing up to 10*mph, mainly sitting between 60 and 80, even in the twisties. Did not get held up much with traffic, but had quite a few villages and things to go through...

I would allow 10hours *at least* if you want to have reasonable breaks for food during the day.

Dude, that is a seriously long ride, and some of them roads are not for the faint hearted coming into and out of Gisborne through the gorges (and watch out if it has rained - slippery as and tight to boot).

It does however go through my home town of Wairoa (1/2 way between Gis and Napier in the middle of Hawkes Bay), and the have a bakery that has won the "Best pie in NZ" award for a few years, just opposite the lighthouse on the south side of the bridge.

You'd have to factor in stops every 200km or so for gas and stretches at 15 minutes at a time, with maybe a longer one for lunch.

It'd be an interesting ride either way, but I dont think I can get time off from SWMBO to join ya. Bugger.

PS. I'd be impressed as hell if you can do the whole ride in less than 12 hours rather than 9.

Did you allow for fueling time? My average for the GC was around 90Kph (this included fuel stops). To do this I only spent enough time to fuel and pee at Service Station (less than 10mins) and there where quite a few times I was honking it on "Roxanne" (Let's say that if I had got done I would have considered myself lucky to get what SpeedMedic got).
PS: Make sure you know where the 24hrs fuel stations are. Have a list from the GC if you need it.

Na, not even a 1/2 GC (close but). It's his time allowed that he will have to watch. Always allow more and then do it in less, is my advice (then you have time for choas)
