It's difficult enough to judge the speed of an oncoming motorcycle, without that judgement being exacerbated by excess speed.
The looming effect, when combined with motion camouflage, produces too many crashes like this.
If we are aware that an intersection is dangerous, how about we treat the intersection as if it is...............dangerous.
Still, every word spoken or written after the crash won't change the outcome.
Anything at 2.6 times the scale you are accustomed to would be difficult to get your head around in the first go.
Generally only in the busy hours is the intersection a real problem. Few lanes to cross. Napier Rd/Main Rd is four lanes from the Terrace End lights to the town boundary. But usually at every few weeks there is some sort of incident were this crash occurred.. Traffic lights or possibly a roundabout would certainly help. Would slow traffic a bit before hitting the boundary. The same goes for the next intersection down as that is on a road drop out of town, rise into town just by the new AFC Motorcycle location.
The "it's always the tin tops fault" doesn't help here....
Speed appropriate to the conditions? Nope.
Rider in control of bike? Nope again.
Motorcycle in accident last registered over 6 years ago...anybody see the pattern developing
So you're saying he was a meth head with no license and a string of driving convictions?
Only a Rat can win a Rat Race!
That's a bit much isn't it going on a report in Stuff? Obviously caspernz has checked the rego from the plate in the photo but other than that all we know is the dude was 21. When I was 21 I was a complete twat on the road but I managed to get away with it. Some don't.
That's why me Mum never wanted me to have a bike.
Absolutely agree Bonez - The chap was clearly going too fast for the conditions (Be they weather, road, traffic etc.) and sadly paid the ultimate price.
However the media are very quick to use so-called facts to spice up a story without actually bothering to check for any substance behind them. This figure will get quoted again, quite possibly during the subsequent investigation, and will become a given despite having no basis in truth. That's what frustrates me. Plus like others have said nothing that is said will bring him back - So why enflame an already sad situation by throwing poorly thought out reporting into the mix?
His speed would have been closer to 130kph than 50kph looking at the damage caused to the car and the bike so closer to the truth than not......
You should work for the SCU.
I examined my step sons bike after he was killed riding it like a dick on cold tires....
