I've checked the figures for 2019 and we had 11% of the total fatalities and 33% of the population. So we're actually doing much better than I thought.

To anyone thinking "it's only Auckland", just remember that this will be the thin end of the wedge and your town will be on the to-do list of bureaucrats who repeat the deluded mantra of "speed kiils mmkay".

Jeez, and we all bitched over here when they dropped our local main road from 110 to 100! 🤫
..and they dropped some 60 k areas to 50.

The worst part is by catering to the lowest grade you create a new, lower grade; but no-one seems to get that.
I'm starting to think the roads are being built for the "millennials", slow enough so you can check your smarty phones on the go

The current road toll is 352.

Given your average toll ... that's about 35 people that have died in that city area alone ... so far this year.

And that (apparently) is better than you thought ... ???

Or is this just a bad year ... ??

From what I can gather is some areas have reduced the speed is because of urban expansion.. That is not a bad thing..

You may have missed it, but the Auckland Council covers the area from the Waikato River to just south of Mangawhai. 40 deaths is 11% of the national total in an area with a third of the NZ population.

It may be interesting to see a breakdown of peoples place of residence compared to location of death. To see if it aucklanders who can't drive outside auckland. Or how long the unfortunates have resided in NZ.

That would prove if locals are crap.

Having said that I have witnessed accidents which have been caused by someone's actions who was totally in the wrong but have caused others to crash trying to avoid them.

Won't be long and we will have speed limited cars...... controlled by RFID or similar. Instant fines for any type of misdemeanor.

This is just my impression from news reports, but it seems most of the deaths are in the urban areas with very few on rural roads.

I'll have a look on the AT website. (Auckland Transport)

The technology to control the vehicle speed or monitor the vehicle speed would be much the same. So they could either remotely force the vehicle to confirm to the limit, or they could just fine the vehicle owner for exceeding the limit. I guess we all know which option would be taken.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.
