Getting closer to being quicker to walk than take the car....
Not sure exactly how it costs $8.4 million, or $46,300 per school, to lower the speed limit though.

That’s pretty cheap, with any “ infrastructure” build there are many components.
Firstly there will be the illusion of some kind of local consultation with community, hireage of meeting Hall and catering.
Traffic site management operations during changes.
Physical components, signs, plastic speed bumps electronic signs. Changes to keening and islands, token tree planting to keep eco-nutters happy.
Surveying of site before and after and audit of job.
Let’s not forget how much Jacinda blew on tranny gully opening ceremony.
My property needs about 50m of metal fencing and double width gate. 5 years ago the quote was about 13k materials and labour (I know you can get cheaper fence systems but wanted quality). I’d fully expect the same setup is prob 20k now so 46k fir school signs setup not bad....
The only way we fix this madness is to implement Labour’s ONE good idea they had in last six years. And that would be to resurrect the ministry’s of works to fulfill ALL govt and council infrastructure work.
Govt gives you nothing because it creates nothing - Javier Milei
Good to see they've got their priorities right.
Vast swathes of infrastructure missing or needing serious repair (like motorcyclists literally crashing when they hit pot holes)... but yep, lets burn it on speed zone changes...
Fortunately they're not accountable (or at least seemingly unaccountable) so can do what they like!

Unfortunately projects funded for this financial year will probably continue. I understand that Auckland Transport is reducing speed limits around rural schools to 30 km/h.
Road deaths for this year to date are down by 14%, but that may simply be all of the bad weather during summer keeping people at home!

Waka Kotahi are still pushing their blanket speed limit reductions around schools, but want the ratepayers to meet the cost, a mere $70 million for Auckland.

A few years ago we had weeks of traffic chaos caused by blocking most of the side roads in the residential area of Onehunga with planter boxes. That too was paid for by Waka Kotahi with our taxes, and it took some direct action by residents before it was ended.
