I generally don't use Wikipedia because of it's Left-Wing bias. But when it comes to certain topics, it's useful precisely because of that Bias. This being one of them.
So, whilst I agree in part, the in part being that some of Gender theory is pure marxist lunacy.
But to give a degree of creedence, I do believe that there is a mental condition called Gender Dysphoria that has always existed. We have pretty conclusively evidence of very effeminate Men, we've got certain cultural practices (Fa-Fa fena? Spelling?) and other bits and pieces that I think it's safe to assume there have always been people who wished they were the opposite sex to what they were born as.
Would James Barry call herself that? I don't know.
But if the claim of 'lived a private life as a man' is correct, then that would certainly fit the requirements to be considered self-identifying as Male based on modern criteria.
It's a lot more common than you'd think. Married Men who've born children to come out as Transgender.
I mean probably the most famous Trans person - Kaitlyn Jenner fits that bill to a T.
