yeah, that beggars belief really.. who on earth allowed the race to proceed in the first place?

This should be in the WSB thread but the ripples are spreading. Dean Berta Vinales, 15, cousin of Maverick, died following an incident in the Supersport 300 race. Commentators are expressing concern that the number of teens dying in motorcycle races this year year is going to attract unwanted government attention. It has been a bad year.
Slowing down the bikes wouldn't appear to be a solution, the bikes in Supersport 300 are about as slow as it gets.

Yeah, RIP.
The dude from crash net was saying that the 300s and 400s are slow, so they dont slide off the track, and end up in the middle of 40 other riders.
They need to sort that out

My thoughts:
Some years ago the FIM and Dorna put in train a plan to make the racing at the highest level, more even. So that factories and factory supported riders would not always have the upper hand, as had often been the case in the past.
This included things like one brand tyres, one brand engines, weight limits, cost limits, engine number limits etc. At the same time they, and other contributors, created a series of Talent Cup style programmes, eg Rookies Cup, Asia Talent Cup, CEV JWC, ETC etc etc. Unfortunately, there have been unforseen outcomes. Yes, the motorcycle equaling rules worked, more bikes are capable of being at the front. But, now also, the riders are all as good as one another.
So, where 10 years ago we had several groups of a handful of riders competing for a position, we now have one or two large groups competing for that position. The riders are young, 13-18 years old, all still with teenage brains and not much experience. In Moto3 the bikes are able to go 230+ km/h, in WSS300 the bikes are heavy and don't travel far when crashed. The outcome is that now, we have created an environment that is significantly more hazardous that it was 10 years ago.
Racing is hazardous. Lots of things we do in life are hazardous. But it is, as Michel implies, up to the governing bodies who created the situation in the first place, to rectify the situation and reduce the hazards. One suggestion that was made elsewhere is to reintroduce 2-stroke engined bikes. The thinking is that they are lighter and easier to control, but also they more difficult to ride consistently, so that small errors result in large time penalties to the riders so that the gaps will become larger and hence safer.
Sadly, my own opinion is that the horse has bolted. Regardless of making such changes, the same numbers of riders will now still be able to arrive at the same place at the same time, simple because all of the Talent programmes are so good and so many kids want now to become a part of the show, either in MotoGP or WSBK. Perhaps also the days of the gentleman racer, as Valentino has alluded to with his criticism of Marcs methods, are also over. That aggression and even more are now a part of the game. Rubbing has always been racing, to some degree, more accidentally than deliberately, but many commentators now think the game has changed.
In NZ we don't have the issues we see at the world and European levels due to both our small numbers and also the longstanding MNZ policy of limiting riders at senior events to 15 years of age. I will put my hand up to say I have been critical of this policy in the past, but I now agree that it has significant merit. It does not however change the fact that even if the riders in Moto3/WSS300 were all 20 years old, the numbers arriving at one point at the same time would still be the same and the same increased risk of catastrophic outcome would exist. I don't now know how to change things other than to increase the costs so that fewer competitors can/want to compete. Interested in comments

I was a big fan of the suggestion for Moto3 of shortening the gap allowed between 5th and 6th gears.
Basically if the slipstream is not as effective the riders in front will be able to break away and form battle packs, limiting the amount of riders involved in the battle.
It'd fix qualifying too as they'd not be as reliant on a tow to qualify well.
This is a simple fix and could be done at relatively low cost.
They also need to actually clamp down on the more dangerous riding. Seeing the likes of MM get away with cutting the nose off riders in the braking zone in moto2 10 years ago, now everyone does it as it was allowed then. If they'd clamped down at the time (like many MotoGP riders wanted them to) he'd have stopped and riders wouldn't be doing it now. But they didn't and now racing is not as safe.
They need to grow some nuts

The Spaniard will not race in Austin this weekend following the tragic loss of cousin Dean Berta Viñales
Tags MotoGP, 2021, RED BULL GRAND PRIX OF THE AMERICAS, Maverick Viñales
Maverick Viñales will not be on the starting grid for the GP of the Americas scheduled this weekend on the circuit in Austin, Texas.
Less than a week has passed since the accident involving Dean Berta Viñales, Maverick’s young cousin, which is not enough time to regain the serenity needed to race. Maverick, with the full and unconditional support of Aprilia Racing, has therefore decided to take a break on his journey of getting to know the bike and team from Noale.
The entire Aprilia Racing family supports this decision and stands with Maverick and his loved ones. There will be other times and other rounds to resume the promising journey begun together. A journey that must be entirely respectful of the people involved and their feelings.

Pretty cool for a change to watch some NZ friendly breakfast time FP sessions.
So.... MM is to blame for all the accidents and deaths now, and the COTA track is too dangerous for FQ to ride.
Obviously they havent ridden SH22 from Tuakau south...
