Also it means the slow fecker in front won’t suspect he’s about to be overtaken allowing you to ambush nicely at next safe spot and pass with momentum before they get a chance to speed up.
    You're counting to fast.

Watching the approaching traffic for gaps coming up ... speeding up to time your overtake when the gap arrives ... you can be past before the bugger sees you coming ... and back at the speed limit before plod gets interested and your speed locked on.

Timing is everything. Don't get it wrong.

You’ve got me wrong, that’s all part of the technique as well. If your very close to someone that’s dicking around at say 80-85 then you need significant more power for successful overtake if they do the usual last minute foot down.
Whereas if you’ve already got momentum of a speed differential your horsepower is a failsafe extra margin available.

Yup, a bit of forward planning works wonders.

And overtaking on corners, not blind, tight ones - open, clear ones. Most folk are exceedingly reticent to overtake and steer at the same time.

I ride an FJ1200. Their HP specs say they have "A significant amount" of power. Very quiet (original pipes) too at speed.

I also drove trucks (of various sizes) for many years. And I got paid by the hour ...

Forward planning YES ... keen observation on approaching "Stuff" ... YES too.

The issue with overtaking on those corners ... take care. I have had a few (seemingly) unaware/uncaring that I was behind them and ready to pass. Those are the one's that cut the corner just as you are pulling out to pass. About that time ... you wish your bike was fitted with a train air horn. Or a rocket launcher ... either would work for me ...

The explanation above fits in with the "I HAD to get past him, he was going too slow" excuse too

Bullshit. Somebody in control of a vehicle at (or above/below) the prescribed speed limit ... cannot cause the person in control of the vehicle behind ... them to break any of the road rules pertaining to following distances. Any action (outside of the road traffic laws) the driver in the following vehicle takes ... does so by personal choice and can be held responsible for causing some resulting events if they take inappropriate or illegal driving actions. The onus has ALWAYS been on the overtaking driver to carry out the maneuver SAFELY. No regard is held in law as to the urgency that could be felt by the following driver to overtake. Even with a perceived emergency.

Human behavior does not excuse law breaking. Ignoring the traffic laws on the basis of the "natural behavior" (of idiots) ... that disregard the traffic laws because ... they do not suit them at the time ... will not wash in any court of law.

Almost worthy of a separate post, the most commonly spoken things to cops.

Seatbelt...................."I was just putting it on".

Seatbelt.................."I always wear my seatbelt. This is the first time ever."

    Stop sign.................."But I slowed down."

    Stop sign................."There was nobody coming."

    Cellphone..............."But it was on speaker."

    Speed................"Everyone goes that fast."

Speed...................."I was overtaking." (Even when there isn't another vehicle witin 2 km)

    Generic.................."Revenue collecting ***********."

    Scummie, your turn.

Very much so. I hesitated to post overtaking through a corner because there is so much to consider, then thought fuck it.

You high light a very pertinent point, particularly on narrower roads.

    Yeah do it be hilarious....

Some from me, family and workmates I know of...

Me speed.........” Well my Speedo is accurate cause that’s about how fast I thought I was going too! Was just trying to put some space between me and those trucks” - good cop smiled and let me go 116k in rain on 750 after overtaking trucks Taupo 20 years ago in the good ol days.

Cousin speeding..........” I’ve got cancer just hurry up write the ticket and F$@& off I haven’t got long to live” she’s beaten the brain tumours several times and not crashed either... poor cop didn’t know what to say

Truckie mate........”Does your mother know your doing this for a living” straight out cheeky but it got both of us bypassed through checkpoint while cop went and cooled off and prob red flagged Greg in the system for life if he wasn’t already

Me speed........ “ Yep sounds about right glad I looked in mirror as was about to open it up (gsxr1100)” got 5k discount for being polite

Me truck speed/logbook with highway patrol 4am.....”No your wrong that’s not how it works *gently retained possession of logbook from cop* I don’t need to write anything in there for 5.5hrs from last rest break, I can’t draw a line while I’m driving!” Cop returns to patrol car, sulks for 20minutes then returns with my 82/70k 4am ticket....(good result as that one had a bad rep with all truckie)

I like where this thead is going.

I can't give you a green rep because at leasetd one mod feels the need to veiw all of my post for some reas before releasing them. If that rep was observant they would figure out that if the KB KNitting Members put me on ignor their post count drops enormously whereas mine stays around the same.

Kep the motorist accuses for breaking the law with respect to public roads.

One I heard (and I used a while back) ... to the cop asking me what was the need for the speed .. ?? I said my wife left me for a cop. I thought he was bringing her back.

He laughed ... and said .. Fair enough ... and told me to be on my way.

I got pulled over once and asked what the hurry was. I said that I didn't think I was speeding and enquired what speed he'd clocked me at. He didn't tell me, and instead sent me on my way telling me to slow down a bit.

My wife and I (she was driving) got pulled over doing 120 km/h in a 100. She asked the police officer "please don't ticket me because I've been giving him shit all week about a speed camera ticket, and if I get a ticket I'll never hear the end of it". Naturally, he said 20 km/h was too far over the limit, and that she'd get a ticket in the mail.
