I am now hate watching it.

There are too many changes from the source material and it has become a generic sci fi shootemup. The things that made Gibsons book great are largely missing so what we have is some tropes, some Gibsonesque windowdressing - we are not told what "neoprims" are (yet) and we have not met Lowbeer, Clovis or other absolutely crucial characters. Because they are hardly in it. The wholesale slaughter of large parts of the plot (like the neoprims and their motivations, like the shift in focus to a manufactured for TV villain, like the turning of Lev into a cuckold cartoon villain - for christ's sake like making Dominkia into an actual character. It all started in E1 and has continued apace.

If the book wasnt one of my two favourite books of all time* then perhaps I wouldnt feel this way and could watch it on its own terms as a generic sci fi actioner. At this point I would rather watch Edge of Tomorrow - again. Fuck, I'd almost rather watch Star Wars. Not quite but we've sunk to that level.

I've not followed this thread so sorry if this is old news: if you like that, also try (Netflix) "oats studios".

In a bizarre vein the Cabinet of Curiosities, or some such, is worth a watch. It's a bit like a modern take on the old Tales of the Unexpected.

Its very good indeed. No spoilers.

Thanks. I'll have to remember that for when I reinstate my Prime access when the next jack Reacher series appears.

And completed. Yep the TV series went off script a bit. Probably best if R650 never reads this as it will confirm his conspiracy bias with such gems as "my being threatened by assassins in the pay of New Zealand's secret state" among other NZ mentions.

This is really surprisingly good: SAS Rogue Heroes. And its free on TVNZ on demand.

I thought some of the more far fetched things depicted were fictionalised. Only lightly if at all, it turns out.

    Well worth a watch.

I've seen some excerpts from that and I've been considering it, so may check it out.

Clangy jangly music is grating. And loud compared to the dialog. If it had subtitles I could mute the noise.

So this is an interview between Temple Grandin and Jordan Peterson.

Temple is world famous for both being an Autistic Woman, but also for her work in Animal Welfare, particularly the design of Abattoirs.

Some parts of the conversation that I found interesting:

The disappearance of practical skills in the workplace.
Different types of thinking - particularly those who are mechanically minded.
The relationship that needs to exist between each type of thinking.

Temple, for all her peculiar ways of speaking, can be rather hilarious.

Chickens are coming home to roost here. We’re seeing the results of political interference in education system that started about 20 years ago. Some bright spark theorised we were going to a smart knowledge based techno/internet economy that there would be no need for woodwork and metal work skills. Funding was cut at intermediate level then this flowed into secondary environment.
We are having to change way tools are used because the new generation of dumb can’t operate multiple physical process controls at once and they might have an accident trying to keep up with traditional skilled workers.
You wonder how much this contributes to youth crime, so many young men’s minds never getting the creative spark early on of making something instead of just breaking stuff.

Something apprenticeships used to do, beside the actual teaching of a trade, was to pair the callow youth with an older, 'experienced-in-the-ways-of-the-world' tradesman. I (automotive diesel mechanic apprenticeship at GG&H) learned as much about life, as diesels, during my time. Kept me out of trouble, taught me a lot about what works and what doesn't.

The school I teach at has a robust practical curriculum. Woodwork, carving, hospitality, mechanics, building, horticulture, electronics ect, ect.

Some of the kids are from criminal families and they are kicking and screaming to get away and stand on their own feet. They know a dead end when they see one and want nothing to do with what their family gets up to. It's quite heartening to hear a kid talk about what they want to do and openly shun what happens at home. A few pupils are so fed up they have left home before leaving school and are couch surfing so they can continue to attend.

There is a lot going on in education, most of it is excellent. But, as the immortal line from Coolhand Luke states - "Some men, you just can't reach."

That’s great if things are still happening old school way in your town.

Most of you guys are prob getting Curtiss in your feed. Here he explains his path to success amongst other questions. For those who haven’t watched he does great work doing custom repairs on anything from bulldozer rams or other big gear that needs lathe, milling or welding.
