I've been watching 'Joe and Nic's Road Trip' on YouTube. Descriptions like bleak and post apocalyptic are appropriate. I had read that poverty in the US was way worse than could be found in Britain. I'll believe it after watching this. Whole areas with dilapidated abandoned houses. In other towns the abandoned housing has been bulldozed, and the area taken over by weeds. The official euphemism is "urban prairie". In some towns the Main Street looks clean but off Main Street weeds have taken over the footpaths. Crime of course is through the roof.
Whole areas of cities have nothing but abandoned buildings. It's sad because there is some lovely architecture but there's no coming back from that far gone. Nobody can afford to renovate, the city can't afford demolition. It's not just the south, or the inner cities, it happens widely it seems. The show is just a guy talking as he drives around with his camera. He does give statistics but even so it can be a bit slow and I'll admit to jumping ahead if it lacks interest.
We can safely assume that Joe and Nic's Road Trip is not endorsed by the various state tourist departments. These areas don't make it into the movies, the only place you'll see it really is here.
I watch it small doses, too much could be depressing, but it's a whole nutha world.
There’s another good one like that a guy revisits Chicago/Detroit suburban areas and shows before and after. He rarely ever brings his car to a complete stop for obvious reasons…
That’s all coming here one day if the commies keep dismantling our society… all it takes is a bit of unemployment with a dash of no freedom of movement/unaffordable travel….
