    Yamaha R-7

Was supposed to be announced by Yamaha mid next week but predictably there's leaked shots out already. Looks alright, USD forks, radial front caliper, bars look pretty low though.. Not sure if the motor is identical to the MT or if they've breathed on it a bit.

Will be interesting to see how much more expensive it is over a MT-07. Seems to be a bit of a mix of new components and the old MT platform. Those looking for sporty twin with high HP will still be better off with an Aprilia RS660 but the 20K price tag may be a bridge too far for some and I guess that's where Yamaha may pick up a few sales with this bike.

I heard today that that Australian ones are expected be AUD 14k for the LAMS version and 15k for the high output version.

Looks like there's some on TradeMe already.

14.5k for the HO and 13.5k for the LAMS.

Thanks for the info. So $2,200 premium over the MT. Not outrageous I guess. I got a buddy who reckons he's going to get one. He's not liking the look of the low bars but I told him it's nothing that cant be fixed with a set of Wood craft riser clip ons.

I know two guys who have pre-ordered (one for an exclusively track bike). There definitely seems to be some demand for them.

They have the 73 HP MT engine and weigh 188 kg wet. Looks a bit sad next to the Aprillia.

True, and Im still going to get an Aprilia myself but the R-7 will sell well. The first shipment for the US sold out in under 24hrs. That MT engine will be ideal for riders who buy it as a road bike more so than a track bike, it's got such great midrange grunt for rolling it on out of corners. A buddy of mine has a 2019 model and it's a hoot to ride.

I know that I'm in the minority on this, but I really didn't like the engine power delivery characteristics of the MT-07. I seriously considered buying an MT-07 before I settled on my Street Triple. However, when I took it for a test ride, I just found the power delivery not to my taste and a bit boring. (Don't get me wrong, I could have fun on any bike, just some more than others.)

It's not about the outright power, just how it delivered it - for example, I find my R3 commuter bike's engine characteristics fun and engaging to ride, even though it is well down on power compared to my Street Triple.

You've hit the nail on the head there. My Moto Guzzi V85 isn't powerful by any means but it's enjoyable to get the best out of it and you need to actively ride it, unlike the bigger engined ADV bikes where you can afford to be lazy and not bother changing gears very much.

I suspect the R7 will sell well as it looks to be well priced. Compared to the RS660 you have a real choice between power and tech versus lower power, less tech but a significant money saving with the Yammie. It's good to have the choice

I'm surprised they are using the same name as the previous R7 of Noriyuka Haga fame that had the 4 cylinder engine.
    Cheers

I agree, but most people who buy it won't even know about the previous R7.

The average rider is going to see $5,000 between the Yamaha and Aprilia and go, it's the R7 for me

I wonder if Kawasaki have anything in the wings ? Their Ninja 650 at 67hp is going look behind the 8 ball. Although it's riding position looks much more road worthy, given our 100 km/h limit and Rozzers needing to get their ticket quota up.
    Regards Kevin
