    Classic car insurance

Does anyone have any direct experience of insuring a classic car? We're in the process of buying a "classic" and will be checking insurance offers with our existing car and bike insurers. I know there are so-called specialist insurers for classic vehicles but have no idea at this stage whether they offer any advantage over regular insurers or even what to look out for when insuring a classic vehicle. Any comments from those with direct experience much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Geoff

    We own a mid 80's Fiat X1/9

All our vehicle policies are with AMI

When I went to insure it I was offered 'Classic Insurance' without even asking for it

We also have a mid 80's Range Rover, again insured with AMI - its only 3rd Party Fire and Theft and costs more than twice that

Thanks for that Jim, I'll have a good look round before commiting. Always liked the X1/9's.

Funnily enough, when we tried to add our recently acquired X1/9 to our AMI policies it quickly became too difficult...

Vero turned out cheaper and very easy.

Yep, I've had that problem with bikes and State in years gone by. I've just had a quote from Classic Car Insurance which is a Star offshoot. I was surprised how reasonable it was for comprehensive cover tailored to low mileage, hobby users . $234 or $270 with vehicle recovery. 1972 MGB GT in concours condition.

I'm trying to work out whether I can afford any insurance on the car of my boyhood dreams.

I have a 1934 Austin 10 and 1991 Jaguar XJ40 both insured with Vero on their Classic policy. Jag $10k agreed value and Austin $7k agreed value. Both limited to 7,000km per year. Jag costs $190 and Austin $78.

I got my quote by filling in the online questionnaire. It will be interesting to see what happens at the next stage.

I had a fleeting look at the Lotus Cortina too. There's another one for sale at about $130k! Decided that if I wanted to splash out that much, it would be a GT40 or Cobra replica. Common sense prevailed though and went for something more modest

    Star Insurance

Rang Star for a quote the other day on my Valiant, $310 for $40,000 cover, not too bad I thought. Insuring my 4 bikes a scarier scenario though.

That's not bad at all Krusti. What sort of Valiant - ordinary saloon, Pacer or Charger? I see that any sort of Charger is fetching some pretty serious money now.

Hahaha! Already got it with the AA . It's so simple under the bonnet that there's a fair chance of fixing it by the roadside if anything turns to custard.
