    2030 Petrol Vehicle Ban

Thought you guys might be interested in this 'great idea' by the Ministry of Transport in a proposal about to be delivered to the government.

TLDR; unless opposed, the government are likely to ban imports of light Internal Combustion Engine vehicles by 2030 or 2035 and ban ownership completely by 2050.

Is this something you have a problem with? If so, tell them about it by sending a submission to transportemissions@transport.govt.nz before Friday 25th of June (that's this Friday!).

    MOT Discussion Document:

Govt Press Release & Other Relevant Info:

I personally have no problem with electric cars, but I DO have a problem with the government telling me what kind of car I can own!

Speak up now or this may come to pass!!

Pass this on to others who may be interested as well!

Seems a sure way for a government to loose an election.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

I have no problem with any of it at this point. i'll be dead by then anyway. And look around you a little - manufacture of petrol powered vehicles will have ceased by then.
What you need to do is join one of the various clubs or organisations working for historic vehicle exemptions.

    Already being discussed here ...

    https://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/s...Z-petrol-power

The good communists never “ban” anything it will just be taxed into oblivion....

Remember all the hysteria around peak oil a few years ago... we should be well and truely on other side of bell curve by now paying horrific prices and constrained supply but we are not.....

I see fluff news had some wanky article headlined about an EV doing a 9000km trip around NZ in 100 days.... FFS that’s only 90km a day average or one hours open road driving and they call it a success!!!!

That’s prob a hint at our future though as to what level of long term use of the EV makes its lifespan sustainable, eg higher repeated use of long journeys prob shortens battery lifespan making it a net loss over say 15 years compared to petrol

You may well be right, but if no-one speaks up they'll take it as silent approval...

So they took the better part of 3 months to do it. How many can afford to take 3 months holiday to make a similar trip. And most likely the battery will be fucked at the end of the trip.

However ... I can see rental companies doing a swap at depot's around the country. Drive into the depot and swap it for a charged one and you're on your way.

I don't care there will always be a collectors license or similar. The analogy has been made to me that people still choose to own horses, as inconvenient as that may be, so there will probably always be an avenue for people to own and use ICE motorcycles.

In saying that, as soon as KTM / BMW release a big ADV bike with replaceable battery (ie you pull into energy station and swap out 50kg battery with a new one off the rack, similar to bbq bottles) and you have another 500km range (with all the extra performance an electric motor can provide) i'll be first in queue.

If a week is a long time in politics then 14 years is an aeon. A lot could happen between then now and then.

Also not a “ban on petrol powered vehicles,” just a ban on selling new ones. With quite a few exceptions for trucks and commercial vehicles.

And the cost to get such a license would be exorbitant. And the amount time/circumstances (dated permits required .. ??) that you will actually be allowed to use them very limited.

But I'm of the opinion ... that internal combustion engines will be banned from inner city areas first.

That may be how it works - or not. There may be social engineering to categorise recreational use of fossil fueled vehicles as anti-social.

Anyhoo, it's very unlikely that it will be a problem for me.
