There is a hot dog cart in Lower Hutt, in the car park of the Maungaraki overbridge. There almost every day, never seen anyone buying anything. Always makes me laugh when people talk about doing route 66 as if it is a mindblowing life experience.
There is so much more to do and see in the states that is actually a memorable and unique experience, going to an Elvis and Marilyn diner on route 66 is only one step above going to McDonalds
