Single click noise when trying to run bike

I recently bought a battery for my 1989 Honda cbr250r mc19. The battery wasn't fully charged so I charged it up and threw it in but when trying to run the bike all I got was a single click noise. Electrics work but bike won't run. Also noticed that little bit of smoke came from the terminals when trying to run it. Bike also needs a stator so that could be a factor but I'm not sure the full extent of the problem.

Smoke coming off terminals is a pretty sure bet the terminals have been connected front to Backwards, checked?

The terminal I connected to positive was marked red so I assumed it went there. I will try tomorrow.

And make sure they're snugged up and making a good connection.
