    into New York's World Trade
    Towers, causing both buildings
    to collapse.Terrorists also
    hijack a plane and crash it
    into the Pentagon.ΐnd during
    an attempt by passengers
    and crew of United Airlines
    Flight 93 to retake control
    of their hijacked plane from
    terrorists, the plane crashes in
    a Pennsylvania field, killing all
    64 people on board.In total,
    2977 people died as a result
    of the attacks.

    1857-The SS Central America mail steamer
    sank off the coast of South Carolina after
    being caught in a hurricane.
    More than 450 people died when the ship
    sank.
    But what keeps the "Central America"
    ( originally named the "SS.George Law" ) in
    the nations consciousness is not the loss of
    life,but the loss of cargo.
    In addition to tons of mail heading from California
    to New York the ship carried tons of gold from the
    California gold fields.
