Sell and buy, trade in and buy, buy then sell?

Any advice or comments welcome on my situation re buying a bike.

    I own a bike....2016 Triunph street twin.
I want to buy another machine....Ducati.

In your opinion what is the best way forward....

    Trade in and buy.
See the bike, buy it, sell your old one later
Sell first then buy the one you want.
    Other....

    Thanks in advance

It's going to depend on a lot of factors. But, as a general rule, I'd expect a trade in price to be around a grand lower than you could get selling a bike privately. Potentially a lot less hassle though.

Surely it depends mostly on your financial position, but there may be other factors. I do not for example, have space for two bikes so i would go for trade in or sell old bike before buying new one.Trade in most convenient but probably most expensive way of swapping

Dont do what I did on Friday which is to impulse buy another bike, then realise you literally cannot fit it in the shed and then have to decide which of the other babies to sell because SWMBO has pitched a bit of a fit. FFFFFUUUUU. Non-related: my Street Triple is for sale.

Out of interest, what did you replace it with?

Very nice. As a Street Triple owner myself, I was wondering what you'd chosen to take its place.

As others have said this depends on a number of factors. Such as where's the nearest dealer? Do you want to use said dealer and therefore build a relationship with them? If so then trade can be the best long-term course of action but it will cost you more money

I've done both and I rather like selling bikes myself. You will get the odd plonkler but overall I quite enjoy the interaction. Plus you will get more money as a result

    Thanks for the input, gentlemen.

I am in Napier which is no where near the centre of Ducatidom.....so it is north or south for me.
Trade in or buy and sell....time and the right bike will tell.

    Thanks again.

I just did this 8 weeks ago, saw a near new bike the exact model I was looking for at a dealer other end of the country, I rang had a 5 minute conversation. I enquired about trade in price & it was close enough that I figured bugger it and traded.
He shipped my bike to Auckland I rode down and switched bikes with the transporter (he paid one way I paid the other)

I'd definitely do so again it meant no hassle and I could just enjoy the new bike without trying to sell a bike in a remote area.

    Interesting, Skipper.

How did you show/demonstrate your machine to the dealer, if I may ask?

Deal is done, pick up and delivery next week.

Colemans in Auckland had a 2010 Suzuki GSX 1250FA that suited me so I dropped the Ducati idea after watching some videos and traded.
The deal was sweet and easy.

Feelings of anticipation are building. Vroom Vroom instead of chuggachugga

Good stuff. I hope it gives you many kilometres of trouble-free enjoyment.

I actually test rode one of those before I bought my most recent R3. (It's safe to say that I was trying out a wide variety of bikes at the time - since my Street Triple is such a good all rounder, I wasn't sure at all what I wanted my second bike to be, so I tried out a whole heap of different options.)

Interesting thought thanks! I'm in Coromandel and wondered about the selling logistics when I put the KTM 790 on the market in a couple of weeks or so. Maybe a just over a couple of hours from Auckland or Hamilton isn't too off-putting though.

Just a thought... I bought two bikes from dealers who were selling them on behalf of the owners.

Considering where your KTM came from and that they have done the services on it and know the bike, perhaps a chat with them might be worth having. Also, somewhere for prospective buyers to view and try without you having folks coming to your home.
