    MR50 Re-reg Questions.

So I dug out the bike I learned to ride on. A 1983 Yamaha MR50 trail.

I need your help here, because the crowd at the AA will no doubt make life very difficult if I ask too many strange questions...

I have the original paper rego, but it was deregistered decades ago (spent most of its life on the farm). I also think it was pre-Vin Plates being riveted on. The original number plate is currently MIA, but I think its somewhere around here.

    Now, the conundrum I have...

    1. Should I try register it as a moped? It meets the requirents as laid out on NZTA from what I can see. But has no vin, only frame numbers.

    2. Does it qualify for the cheap "classic" rego as a motorcycle yet? Is that 40 years? I found it hard to find a straight answer on the Web.

M/C rego option downside is having to do WOF's and the big $$ and hassle of getting it past Re-reg inspection.

Moped rego will not need initial inspection or Wof. Leaving me free to make sure turn signals work and an easy(cheap) commute scoot.

Is it feasible for me to try Re-reg as a moped, using prior reg paperwork as evidence to get issued with a new vin tag?

Or do I just try register a moped "anonymously" and pick up a new plate? Can I do it without a VIN and only a frame number?

Thoughts? Any advice or experience you can share would be greatly appreciated.

    FYI
    Registered as a moped today.
Vin exempt due to proof of registration prior to 2011.

Last time I had 6v lighting, I helped it along with glow-worms in a jar. Was much brighter...

My current thoughts are to abandon 6v altogether and do a 12v conversion with leds

    Caution.

    Reasons for Rejection (WOF)

    19. A headlamp is retrofitted with a type of light source other than that specified by the vehicle manufacturer or the headlamp manufacturer (eg a headlamp designed for a halogen bulb is fitted with any other type of light source such as an HID or LED bulb, or any other light source such as LED strips or non-OEM angel eyes)

My father had one ... and I often had it for back country rides around Central Otago. You can upgrade the bulbs by various means ... but unless you'll be spending some time riding at night on it ... is it worth the expense ??

    I'm doing some more thinking...

Maybe a new flasher relay, new battery and fresh 6v bulbs all around might be the better option.

I have just found the 6v bulbs aren't the correct Watts that the flasher relay calls for.

    Argh. Too many choices.

Spare bulbs and Plugs ... and a GOOD torch always came in handy.

    Eventually.

Overthinking is what I do best (stupid Toolmaker/Machinist brain).

They are amazing little bikes. I put what must have ended up being thousands of km on this one as a kid on the farm.

Almost everyday after school it was "Mum, I'm going for a ride", and that pretty much sums up my childhood.

I'm only planning on using it for my work commute, it's a whopping 4km. There's plenty of streetlights so a headlamp should suffice

It's never fouled a plug, but it had a full rebuild at one point. The bike shop wouldn't believe it was the CDI.... Until after the rebuild that is...

    Yeeeaah Buddy.

    https://streamable.com/rbvn96

Only took a new 6v flasher relay and we are golden.

A 10 pack of bulbs for $4?? I queried it with the guy at the shop, he said yep. So I grabbed 2 boxes .

Still waiting for a new battery, should be here tomorrow. If the weather's good, I'll take the bike to work and give the carbie a good clean.
