Converting a Dirt bike into a street legal bike.

Hey guys, looking to start a project on an old dirt bike with the final result ideally being a street legal SM bike. I have emailed NZTA about it but they haven't responded in some time so thought i'd come here and ask if it's legally possible.

    Cheers.

If the same bike existed as a street legal bike, then probably quite possible.

If not, then you're likely into low volume vehicle certification, which is a considerably larger process.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

It's possible that it would need ABS before it can first be registered.
Clearly there are plenty of non ABS bikes being renewed but I think that any first registration needs ABS. It is what is killing off new DRZ400 and DR650 sales

Dang you might be right, ill have a chat with NZTA about that.

And ya the new ABS law fucked me over, originally was just gonna get a DRZ400SM new but now you can't that are essentially all gone and dealers are only selling used bikes(rarely at that). Not to mention i'm seeing 2008 models on Trade Me selling at what was retail price. So shit.

If you are interested in a good used DRZ400 - new crank and rod bearings, new piston, very good condition my bro in law is selling one. Would include the 17" front and rear wheels (TZ wheels IIRC) conversion
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.
