    Disc rotor cutting

    Can this be done?
Need a new rear for a buell for compliance, are there laser cutters that do discs and if so what is the steel used… thinking no one would put their name to it for safety reasons.

I've done it before and had no trouble getting a wof.

Make sure you get it laser cut rather than plasma cut as the finish will be better, and use high tensile steel (G300 or G350). I had to drill the vent holes myself but that wasn't hard if you have access to a drill press, just lay the old disc over the top of the new one to use as a guide/template.

The only downside is that the plate that it is cut from won't be guaranteed to be perfectly flat but any wobble shouldn't be to noticeable.

Failing that I've purchased replacement discs from metalgear.com.au and not had any issues with them and the price wasn't to bad.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention anyone with a laser cutter should be able to help you. Autobend, Priest Sheetmetal, Precision Cutting... all should be able to draw and cut the disc for you.

Let me know if you need the disc drawn up in CAD. I can help out with that.

    No worries.

Honestly though, you'd probably spend at least $100 getting a part laser cut these days and I'm pretty sure my disc only passed a wof because the tech's weren't looking to hard at it. The added hassle of dealing with that would have made cutting my own disc not very worthwhile.

Well, shit. They do a new rotor for a SOHC CB750. One of the reasons they don't stop is the 50+ year old stainless steel disc material. a modern steel coupled with decent compound brake pads would improve the performance markedly. Obviously still limited by the single live piston swinging on the fork leg but still. I am out of the CB750 business now but I would have bought a new disc if I still had mine.

Great link thanks for posting it.
