Aratere is being parked up next month, one less ferry, that will mean they can take all the motorcycle tie dows off here and spread them around their other ships.....
as it's the only rail ferry expect more trucks on the road too

Came back from the SI yesterday. Kaitaki. It was the emptiest sailing I have ever seen. The seating area by the cafe on deck 7 had only 3 groups of people.
The very foward seating area had only about 20 people. They had several drills on the journey. The messagges on The PA regarding said drill were ear splitting. At one point i think we would have been doing 5 knots or so and a Bluebride ferry over took us.

why do these tests need to be earspiltting? We live in a period where they could have a ramped up noise, not full volume straight off, or not full volume at all, same goes for building fire alarms especially old folks homes, they nearly frighten an inmate to death each time they test.....

Because there’s always going to be the chance someone won’t return it back to full afterwards and purpose drill is to know which places you can’t hear alarm etc.
With modern electronics you could conduct a completely silent full test but who’s going to pay for the upgrade then sign off and pay for the certification etc.

I wonder how well equipped we are in NZ to deal with fire on ferry with the rise of EVs and home made campervan conversions. In this disaster the crew didn’t even deluge right deck due to confusing labelling on controls!BTW this channel has done great with these vids even though it covers some disasters others already had.

still not hard to have it ramping up over a few short seconds, even my alarm clock does that.

    Good news

Came back on the Kaitaki yesterday 2:15pm.Was absolutey jammed down Lagoon Dr.The queue of traffic started 100m before the roundabout that heads for Quedn Charlotte.Numpties were blocking the intersection because they have the foresight of a gnat. Was less than walking pace all the way to the ferry.Straight from the check in to the parking space. And there were tie downs. They had loops on the free end to go over the hand grips so I had to use my own because of the hand guards. The hooks have been removed but are hanging there to be used to hang the loops when you take them off the bike.

My one experience on the Kaitake was such that I avoided it thereafter. At Picton they let the bikes of last. I spent the next hour overtaking trucks. Thanks but no thanks.

No trouble with that. we would have been last off I reckon but as i was last bike on I was also in line for first bike off. I untied the bike and got it out of the wheel chock pointed in the correct dirction. All the other bikes did the same. As the traffic started moving i went in front of the line of cars next to us and rode out when there was a gap in the moving lane .Opposite on the Kaiahari on the way down. we went on the 3 30 am sailing. There were only about 25 vehicles lined up to go on and three bikes. The fellow came over and said they were running late in loading freight. Many many trips were being made by the little tractor units. He came over later and said 25 minutes had turned into 45 minutes. So we could leave our bikes and sit down if we wanted. Then almost immediately he called us up again,so we rode down the the ferry and waited there for 20 minutes!
Ferry finally left at 4 15. We were not late. easy getting off. we were told that there were only 57 passengers, outnumbered by 61 crew
