I've been house sitting for a good friend of mine over the last 14 weeks on and off. My friend owns 2 cats, a dog & a cockatiel...well, she did have a cockatiel.
Whenever I house sat for my friend I took my dog with me b/c my dog & her dog get on really well. Unfortunately my dog chases birds (she's been dived bombed by magpies a few times). I'm sure you can all work out what happened....yup my dog killed her bird.
It happened last night. I wasn't there. My friend used to pick up my dog the night before (b/c I don't have a car) and then I'd go up there the next day.
My poor friend, she had arrived home after working from 9am to 2pm and then 4pm to midnight. She let the dogs into the house & it crossed her mind to go upstairs and close the bird cage, sadly she didn't. To be honest I probably wouldn't have either b/c I've had the bird flying around when my dog is in the house before. All we can assume is that her bird flew a little too low and my dog snapped her up. To top it off today she had to catch the early morning ferry for her week long holiday down in the South Island.
I've just arrived at her place, she had left the bird in her bathroom and asked me to bury it with a pot plant, instead I offered to put it in the freezer until she got home...when I got it I felt sooooooo terrible, it has no head & most of it's feathers were gone. My friend is a really good person and she really loves her animals, I was never very fond of her bird but it was quite cute & really loved her. This may sound almost laughable to those of you who don't own animals but, man oh man I feel ill. I talked to her on the phone this morning and she feels like it's all her fault.
All I could say to her is how sorry I was and that at least it would have been quick. Sheesh.
