How is this thread still going?
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
My plate finally arrived on Monday! I called earlier this month and was told that they are trying to clear the backlog by the end of January.
Mounting it looks like a little more of a mission than I expected. I am trying to avoid drilling holes, as the lack of predrilled holes probably means that there is no standard spacing for motorbikes. Whites do a number plate mounting bracket which looks like it will do the job and comes in black, so have ordered one. I will need to move the reflector down as well and find a new place for the WoF holder as it is currently attached to the number plate.
Not sure I would have bothered if I had thought this through, but the silver and black does look much better on the R1.
Correct, no standard spacing for bikes, BMW is 76mm or something, KTM is 90mm, but yeah, nothing standard.
With the aluminium backer I put the plates on, they're taller than the plate, 4 holes along the top. 2 for mounting, then one either side to hold wof or rego holder.
The BMW reflector is built in above the plate, the KTM had a piece of plastic behind the plate, so I got the narrowest red reflector and stuck it between the mounting holes.

Did you buy the backing plate, or make something yourself? I do not know the dimensions of the Whites bracket, but it should be delivered tomorrow.
Otherwise I may just drill the new plate. I can always use a couple of black plugs to fill in the holes if I need to.

Be careful, mounting the new plates, a backing plate, soft silicone and washers on the plate, will mean your PLATE won't crack and fall off, had 2 do this over the years

Couldn't see anything suitable for my needs in terms of buying something, had some aluminium plate from years ago I'd never used, so cut two pieces out of it, used a grinder on the edges etc. Not display quality, but suffices for my needs.
I've also broken plates in the past, so I know how flimsy they are.

Thanks, the new plate certainly does not feel as robust as the old one.
I bought some black screws for mounting the backing plate today. They are hex socket, so one step better than Phillips for security. I had a look at the security screws for number plates but am not buying something that needs a special tool to remove.

they are not strong. I bumped against the edge of the plate and it bent quite easily. It straightened just as easily but it doesn't bode well for long term. Will consider a backing plate and RTV
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

The issue is that the plates stress harden and then crack through the holes, wife's bike nearly lost the plate completely.
The silly and a backing plate fixed it!![]()
