    Audio Equipment

Audio equipment came up on the recent trademe thread. Just saw this video this morning on making ones own speakers. Looks like a great idea.

    I'll watch that after work.
I bought some kitset speakers that audio magazine came up with and sold through jaycar (might have been from auss shop as this was 25 yrs ago and some). The used Viga drivers. Impressive for volume with pretty damn reasonable sound quality. The Kefs i inherited are more subtle at sensible volumes but could never match the power.

Always made me larf audiophile emperor new clothes effect.
    Oxygen free mains cable anyone?

I love the "magic wires" concept in "audiophile" circles my favourite is "Directional" speaker cable.

I am still on the hunt for new speakers/a better onebox system for the lounge. Basically I need a new larger house with a larger mancave.

What happens if you get them backwards?

    I assume some TimeSpace rift.

Before I retired an electrician came to give me a quote to rewire the house and he commented on my speakers which are the full width of the room apart. He said he often sees expensive gear with the mega dollar cables and the speakers are just either side of the amp because swmbo wants a table in one corner and a cabinet in the other. It doesn't matter how much is spent the gear will never sound as good as it should.

Had visitors a week or so back and played a track that had come up in conversation. Little Feat, New Delhi Freight Train. Was gratified to see the kid's head swivel when the piano began from the speaker to her right.

Thats some conversation! And yes. The only gotcha with speakers in the corner is baffling/reflections. Heavy drapes or if it is domestically acceptable acoustic baffling behind. Plus moving the speakers out from the walls.

My idea of B & W DM683s was voted down by the decorating committee. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketpl...8458?archive=1

If Scotty still has these they are a great buy for someone. He would have taken $1300 for them - probably still would.

The best buy on tardme lately has been these: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketpl...ing/5389855347 They are in Welly and were at $2800 start = reserve for ages. I presume the increase to $5k is he has done an off the books deal for them. They are $14k to replace and absolute quality. Fun fact: Yamaha started as a musical instrument maker and they make very good audio gear.

What it the purpose of mounting those on the stands, other than to make them easier to shift?

My stands i made. They have treaded spikes so they pierce through the carpet for a solid base. Two 4mm steel plates are separated by two 4" pipes and welded.

There are holes drilled above the pipes. I brought some beach sand home and dried it off in batches on the old woodburner, then poured it to full both tubes both stands. They aren't light.

Top plate hasholes in corners. Speakers are screwed to plate.

I presume its to get the tweeters up near ear level when sitting. Also bass drivers that big might be bad for your foundations...... ;-)
