I almost hesitate to say my initial thoughts with the bombing of Gaza etc going on. So I'll try add some context.
This is some of the most evil shit that has happened to mankind (or maybe womenkind) of the last 80 years (excluding wars, genocide etc).

They aren't there for any medical reasons apparently.
When 'the pill' was being developed they knew they would possibly get some push back from the Catholic church. To appease them they added the sugar pills to make it appear more normal to them.
Of course they went full opposition anyway as less births means less Catholics and that is bad for future revenue.
But it was left in there as much of it would probably be taken anyway.
So women for 2 or 3 generations have been needlessly enduring period side effects and of course spending billions on sanitary products.
