    Drinking and Driving

Well it appears like many things, the "no fun" brigade have been successful in reducing this once great pastime and soon might eliminate it completely

    https://www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/3...lice-operation

The stat is that 1% of drivers appear to be getting shitfaced.

Not good enough. Pull your socks up rural Nu Zillin.

    The article is paywalled.

What next, a booze bus on the road into Puhoi on a Sunday arvo?

This happened in England years ago and just about destroyed country pubs.

Some country pubs hereabout have gone - so too all the 'booze barns' in town.

London is losing pubs at a rate of one per day.

The stats have always been about 1-2% of drivers stopped, that’s not too bad a stupidity rating really considering modern society.

Local force has been on the go lately too. What got me was they were doing people for cellphone use and ONLY caught 14. We concentrated on one problem and let another get established.
It’s quite amusing reading the latest articles on introduction of roadside drug testing. The comments in reply are 100% evidence of the effects of drug taking on intelligence and why we need it.

And another pub gone too but if you read article there was another factor at play.

It's in a middle of nowhere, I went a fair few times, even did the world rugby cup first final night, not a local was there for it back then, hard to try and run a business when few people go out now, and there's no way to get home, i'd reckon more locals are getting togehter with shearing quarters as an overnight option.
Herbertville is 10 kms away, at the beqch, with a motorcamp, twenty times the venue
Is the Weber still open another 20 kms closer to dannevirke?

Not really a pub drinker these days except on tour. Classic club lads will know.
I’ve got bad memories of herbetville after hitting a craters of the moon size pothole at the bridge at xxxkm/h. Was happy to see rear wheel still attached but did other damage. Worst part was I saw it on the way in.

Btw that route 52 is a cracker ride and they should have finished the roadworks now, awhile ago it was giving Erzberg enduro a run for its money.

Fuck I love herbertville. Had a great ride over there and got trashed in the pub with the crazy carpet. Slow ride next day for breakfast.

Actually tge worst part was they had a kids game on the television so I studiouslly avoided it.

We stopped there for lunch a few years while riding 52. It did seem to be in the middle of nowhere!

There's a follow-up article with the reaction of the locals. Sounds like the owner managed to get offside with them, which isn't clever if you're trying to run a country pub.

52 is a good ride, we must come back sometime and do it properly.

in terms of a population base close enough to go for a beer and get home without wheels it is, , the pub did move some motel style units over the road but group accomadation is scarce, so they are left with drop ins for one beer etc, the odd local which is tought to try and eek out a living
Herbertvills has a beach and a motorcamp so is a destination, and is 10km away

the nearest town is 55km although there maybe one closer another way

It's a pretty hard business these days for a pub in the middle of nowhere, gone are the days of mum & dad leaving the kids in the car with a lemonade and a bag of chips and settling in for the arvo to get pissed before driving home. Lowering the alcohol limit didn't help either when it's pretty much one pint and you're done if you're driving.

The Hurunui has sat empty for a few years, used to do ok when it was run by the owner who also had other stuff going on to pay the bills, but since being sold a few years back there have been a couple of unsuccessful attempts at keeping a business going. The Hilltop has recently reopened after being closed up for a while, as a function venue only.

Presumably a lot of these were stopping places when transport was slower, but now pretty much redundant if they're only 30 minutes from a destination, so unless you are the destination it's likely to be a struggle.

I remember some of the pissups on the picton ferrys, now you'll not even see a single person at the bar almost ever, occasional people having a stubbie or two,
There used to be rubgy trips stag dos bike rally groups on almost every sailing......

It's meant to be reopening soon
