Used Gear - How to best pass it on?

I've been in the motorcycle safety game for several decades.

In that time, I've collected several jackets, pairs of pants, various other gear. Some gets worn more than others.

I see people every day riding in shocking gear, shorts, t-shirts, that sort of thing. How do we get across to those people that ATGATT isn't just a vague notion, because asphalt isn't a snack.

I'd gladly donate some of my unused gear, if there was a mechanism to do that.

I know that my gear is used, but surely it's better than bugger all.

On a related note I see that Ausie are going to mandate hi Viz and gloves for motorcyclists. I can only suggest a recycle shop at the tip or another similar outlet. They may not be keen because of limited appeal.

Gloves makes Good sense as some people have limited imagination.
Hi vis that's more of a choice. Maybe worthwhile for commuting in shitty weather where conspicuity is paramount.
For much of Aussie though other vehicles aren't likely your issue out of cities. Same here really.

Enforcement is always the problem with legislating things.

Politicians and bureaucrats think something is a great idea, when they have no idea how to practically enforce it.

Lets watch how many additional chases lead to injury and death because some disqualified or unlicenced motorcyclist who isn't wearing gloves get's the red/blues from Police. Who will be blamed when the chase ends in tears.

On the up side, this rule may lead to unlicensed and disqualified motorcyclists wearing gloves and hi-viz, to avoid being caught.

The unintended consequences of mandatory this and that can be interesting.

I kind of understand why idiots wear shorts and t-shirts when it's hot, but how does their brain not see that gloves are the abolute minimum. Gravel rash on legs and arms will be agony but will be mostly fixed with skin grafts (eventually). However, in any fall our natural instinct is to put out our hands. Nerves cannot be replaced by grafts so all touch sensation is lost forever.

I don't believe most of them will be educated until it's too late and I guess even gloves are not seen as cool.

Maybe donate your stuff to a charity shop as they are very well frequented these days. I know I often find bargains.

they could buy everyone on a motorcycle brand new moto gp quality gloves with the $30 they steal each and every year in the name of safety. don't object to paying, but not when less than 50cents of it actually used and there's no action by the organisation supposed to represent and fix shitty things for bikes.

i've offered gear through facebook etc, there's usually someone starting out that would benefit for them, took me three days at two swpameets to give away a pair of boots for free

Been done on here before (ask for a hard lucky story rather than first in first served), or yeah, just put on local riding pages or something on Facebook. That's usually more FIFS, and might go to a cheap bugger rather than someone that really needs it.

If they can afford the bike and they can afford the petrol then they can afford the level of clothing that makes them happy. I have never ridden without gloves and yet I have never ridden in anything but a pair of basic jeans. Each to their own. I shake my head at those who wear less than me but then I do the same for the ATGATT zealots as well. I would just bin all the gear and stop worrying about it, or lose weight so you can use it again.

And I shake my head at hi-viz as a rider aid. If it makes you feel safer then go for it but knowing the stats it won't do a bloody thing.

Don't see you coming towards them with your compulsory headlight on? Hi viz makes no difference
You or them fails to give way and you get T-boned? Not enough time for hi viz to make a difference
Get hit from behind? Well, statistically 87 percent of people wearing hi viz have rear panniers that hide it so will make little difference
Bouncing off the road on a bend when you go too fast for it? Well, the hi viz may help someone find you.

Being seen to be doing something but not actually doing anything. Same as over here.

If your panniers, down at leg level, hide the hi-vis jacket on your back, you must be built different to me. I found a plain white helmet seemed to make me more noticeable, especially on the old GS1100GK, possibly as I may have looked like a cop.
