    New Plymouth to Wanganui “Backroads Ride” - 6/11/05

    Since it hasn't been post up here..

    There is a New Plymouth to Wanganui "Backroads Ride" leaving from Energy Honda @ 9am.....

    This is the format...

    New Plymouth to Wanganui “Backroads Ride”

    (NOTE: Though all roads are sealed, some are in bad repair & can also be slippery. TAKE CARE!!)

    ANSWER IN BOXES â

    1. Leave Energy Honda taking Northgate towards Bell Block;

    2. At the top of Waiwakaiho Hill, turn right into Egmont Road;
    Question: “Name the country hall on Egmont Road?“

    3. At the end of Egmont Road, turn left to Inglewood;

    4. At Inglewood follow the road left onto Rata Street/Tarata Road;
    Question: “How many bridges do you cross on Tarata Road?”

    5. Follow Tarata Road to Kaimata Road & turn right (Exercise extreme caution as this has poor visibility for oncoming traffic!);

    6. From Kaimata Road, turn right onto Tariki Road;
    Question : “What lake appears on the left?”

    7. Take the second left, Salisbury Road (care: It is just past a corner!);

    8. At the end of Salisbury Road, turn left onto Beaconsfield Road;
    Question: “Name the school you pass?”

    9. Left at end onto SH 43, then right onto Skinner Road (about 1km);

    10. Right onto Cheal Road (Note: exercise caution when turning!);
    Question: “What town is named to the right?”

    11. Proceed through Eltham (coffee/smoke stop, if required, here!) taking second left after Eltham, Rotokare Road;

    12. First right, Fraser Road, and continue to the end;
    Question: “Name the hall on Fraser Road?”

    13. Left onto Austin Road (it curves right, becoming Turuturu Road);

    14. First left onto Ohangai Road;
    Question: “Name the famous museum on this road?”

    15. Continue, this turns onto/becomes Meremere Road;
    Question: “What large industrial plant can you see near Hawera?”

    16. At end, right, then left, onto SH3 (If no stop at Eltham, or if you want another, turn right here – 7km to Dairyland Café!);

    17. Once facing south again, take first left, Taumaha Road (just after Manutahi);

    18. This becomes Hursthouse Road, follow it round ‘til it becomes Kakaramea Road;
    Question: “Name at least one public facility you pass?”

    19. At the end, turn onto SH3 (caution!);

    20. Continue through Patea. Just after the bridge (south end of town), turn right.
    This winds its way up the hill (“Follow your nose!”); rejoin the main road (SH3);

    21. Turn right, caution!

    22. Turn right at Rangikura Road (poorly signposted but just after Whenuakura Pa/bridge, follow to end (avoid the dead-ends, it’s pretty well signposted back to SH3)
    Question: “What is the road you see to your left?”

    23. Right onto SH3, then 2nd left, Parihaki Road (care: Slippery road!);

    24. Right onto Paerewa Road, head to Waverley;

    25. Left at Fookes Street (first street in town!), this becomes Waitangi Road;
    Question: “What does it say on the wagon wheel on the left?”

    26. Right on to Okutuku Road (care: Loose metal!);

    27. Turn left onto SH3;

    28. Next left at Moumahaki Road;

    29. Turn right onto Ngutuwera Road (follow your nose, it can be a bit confusing! Also, recent flooding has left silt in places);

    30. Left at Waitotara;

    31. Left at Pakaraka Road (about 7km), proceed to end - Exercise extreme caution!
    T-INTERSECTION LOOMS OUT OF NOWHERE!
    Question: “Name the colour of first two letterboxes on right?”

    32. Right onto Rangatatau West Road, continue to end, turn left at Maxwell (SH3)
    Question: “How many water tanks on the hilltop to the right?”

    33. Continue on to Kai-iwi;

    34. Proceed over bridge, turn right (extreme care!) onto Kai-iwi Valley Road;

    35. Curve left at end (give way!) to become Handley Road, then Rapanui Road (There are a couple of flat straights on this road over 1km long!);
    Question: “Name the reserve on this road?”

    36. At end, turn right onto SH3, continue to Wanganui (whew, you’ve made it!) and stop at Buzz Bar (opp. McDonalds’) to regroup.

    Woah, sounds like a cool ride. Didn't think there really was an "alternate" route to wangas from NP. Guess this still uses SH3 every now and then but sticks off it predominantly. Have to try it sometime. Have fun.

    There were quite a few bikes on the last group ride to wanganui... So i suspect that "that" normal crowd would be going..

    So should be a good one coming?

    Talked to Craig this morning about ride . Think she's going to be a wet one Tho . Craig said about a a lead bike. I said as long as there is someone in the front they will be the one to pass so it will become arace again LOL . Myself I'll see how thing's look tomorrow then go from there . May just head straight to Wanganui then wait for other's then head on to National Park from there .????

    hmmmm... yeah was thinking if its like this tomorrow.. then I'm not terribly too keen on the mystery tour! especially since I dont know the roads terribly well either.

    Though could be in for a ride to Wanganui then National Park.. if the pace isn't tooo fast paced =)

    Big Day out

    Well our Group ride to Wanaganui went very well today with only one little hickup when one of the rider's dropped his new SV1000 on the road in Waverley not only did he snap the gear change end off but did the Clutch lever as well & the blinker plus his visor off his helmet Bugger . I road on to Wanganui to see if I could get something off Brain Bernard or Whitlock's to get him running again as not the best trying to ride with no clucth in town . Got hold of Vahaun & gave Malcom his number so haven't heard if they got it sorted yet . A team of 8 headed of to ward's National Park & on to Raetihi were some got a fill up then off to Taumarunui , all I can say is BLOODY MINT road's for the GSXR . After a bite to eat we carryed on to Awakino to fuel up for the last leg of the Trip . A quick stop for a beer then a nice slow ride home ,thought we had better . All in all a Excellent day out . Wil look at dong it again at the end of summer when the road's are not all melted .
