Are cops allowed to park on the footpath for revenue collection?

10:35 this morning - I spotted a cop car, parked on, and blocking pretty much the whole footpath (on Great North Road - Waterviw)

He's sitting in the driver's seat with a laser gun picking off the speedsters but it raised the question... is he actually allowed to park there for those purposes.

Off the road - sure, in a driveway - maybe (dunno)... but on a footpath?

    Cops out there... comments please.

He's allowed to park illegally if it's necessary in the execution of his duties.
But this situation is not a good look. (especially a photograph printed in the papers).
You could pass his rego on to the council.

I'd call a tow truck, then wait up the road for a bit for a laugh..

Without slinging anything (I hope), I didn't think cops were above the law..?? If we can't, then they surely shouldn't..? lead by example n all that..

I've seen a member of the constabulary engaged in those activities at that location several times over the last few years, parked on the footpath like you describe. maybe he lives in the house behind there and doesnt like commuting much.

he probably gets a good haul. sticking below 60 down that part of Great North Rd is quite an exercise in restraint, particularly just after coming off the motorway westbound when traffic is light.

That makes an interesting point then...

On one hand his duties were to collect revenue... and on the other hand there would have been alternate (not footpath) alternatives.

    hmmm

was he in a marked car?

putting it on the footpath makes it a lot less visible to all the would-be murderers hurtling toward him at 61kph.

    Cool

Parking on a footpath or grass verge is a $40 fine from the council.

As I understand the law.... NO, he cop car isn't allowed to park on the footpath... They can however park on the grass verge if the council has given permission for that particular sight. ie: top of Waikamete Hill, Gt Nrth Rd

Parking a car on the footpath is in fact blocking the way for a pedestrian to get by, which is an offence. So I would ring the council and also the police to verify that what this copper is doing is in fact illegal.

But, lets see what our police on this site say about it.

Who uses the footpath there anyway? If as Fish says he's on the west bound side it wouldn't see a couple of pedestrians all day,so who cares?

Everyone getting the ticket from him as they come off the Waterview offramp...

Not to mention me. I'm fine with people holding me accountable for my actions... so long as they are for theirs.

There have been a few photos published in the Heralds 'sideswipes' section recently showing Police cars in compromising positions, like in the disabled parks.

    Cool

Dynamytus50- Cheers for that... I was actually meaning for getting people speeding etc.. not for everyday incidents...
But as you say police can park where ever they like and get away with it.
