nice pics... you played with the festival of the lights yet?
I must confess, night shots are really not my forte. Most of the shots I've taken come from batches of shots, I take a lot at one time and pick the best ones. With night shots, the batches are wayyy bigger. I also feel festival of the lights is a bit cliche, might give it a try next year though, depending on what camera I have.

Yes, I'm into photography also (Dad's a photographer). I have a Nikon SL reflex but can't remember the model number. It's flash tho'. Shame I've hardly used it as I need a backpack to carry it and prefer to ride with no luggage. We should organise a scenic photo run to pretty spots to take snaps. There are some great City panoramas from the Scenic Drive and you've gotta see Piha, especially at sunset. Happy snapping! SV1000 Gal.
Hiya That's a good idea. I know what you mean in terms of luggage, although I haven't had a camera that doesn't fit into my front jacket pocket yet. That will change soon though, may buy the Nikon off my flatmate.

Ooh, yeah, I've seen some pics of Piha too, it's a beautiful place. I'm trying to move away from cliche sunset shots but sometimes they're just too stunning. Thanks for all your comments!

I do photography, used to sell a lot of my stuff at Craftworld (westgate - end of NW motorway) made a nice profit but the time making the frames (yeah I do that too) just become to much.
SLR - Nikon 601 (old faithful)
Digital - sony S1 IS (highly recommend)

Places out west that are good, depending what you're after of course (I perfer waterfalls, lakes, rivers and old trees etc and the disappearing roads)
Huia, little Huia (both have dams), Up around scenic drive way are a few hidden waterfalls (1/2 hour treks), Piha, Kare kare (waterfall basically beside the road is big thou - also good for romantic trips), bethells (has big sand dunes) bethells area (lakes, waterfalls, sand - black and white), muriwai (often horses on the beach), helensville, old quarry out back of Kumeu.
There is a information center heading up the Waitakeres, sorry forget the name of the place but they sell a book called "Untamed coast" lots of maps and mentions of hidden or out of the way places, like fairy falls.

If anyone is after a digital, there is a place in Newmarket, think it's called e-toys or something (left hand side about 3/4 way down that road that takes you on to broadway - I'm useless with street names) they are one of the cheapest in Auckland, or if you want to compare go to pricespy.co.nz
We childproofed our homes, but they are still getting in.

It is a bit cliche if you show the photos locally. but internationally they get some good oohs and aahs.

Does good to bring up the confidance though and estimating eposures (if you're truely manual) and that reflects later in other photography you do

I wouldn't worry about that. The camera I used in all those shots was a mere A85, and only a couple at the resolution that sets the A70 and 85 apart.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but it still feels cliche to me and that takes some of the enjoyment out of it I think. Although that's more the actual festival's fault than the photography of it. I can imagine getting some really nice abstract shots from it.

Cheers, all of the outdoor pics are from my old backyard. Very fortunate to have such a spot. Kinda miss it now that I've left home, but then again, that's what I'm on here looking for new places for

I used to be into photography years ago when i still had my massive Minolta and the lovely Olympus.
But lost interest.... now i just take photos for fun.
This year me girlfriend got a new 5MP KODAK, and while it has some features that are awesome (i can take pitures at night and it seems like daytime)..... i never want to own another Kodak dig cam. I hate their service, software and video/film (only in QT not AVI). Had a real nice 4MP chinese camera last year (till it got stolen... at BBT) - TEXON or something. Really good camera.

Always dabbled with it over the years. Got an old Voightlander, still a good camera but limited in todays environment. Have an OM1 and usually carry a point and shoot. It's also and Olympus with a zoom. Wife wants a digital but still not convinced that's the way to go for me. usually get my photo's put on a CD then just load in the PC. Time in useing up the film is the downside but the plus I get clarity with film that you do not get with digital. Not unless you spend megabucks.

    Commercially,
if you are going to reproduce more than a few prints it all gets digitised in the printing process anyway. It saves a sometimes expensive step if you shoot on digital to start with.

My digital equipment produces superior images to my 35mm from around $2k.

Photoshop. Every cover I've done, model, object and widget runs through it. Opening a digital camera file is soooo much easier than scanning negs. Modern cameras can capture images at similar resolution to wot a lot of design office 35mm film scanners can these days too.

So which one does your flattie rate as the better, and why?
I have a low to mid-range digital (upper end of Kodak's range), but for fast action or quality shots I prefer my Pentax film camera any day. No manual focus and long shutter delay on the digital give me grief. Watching r4q2 yesterday with his D70, it seemed to be good on both shutter delay and auto-focus.

He likes the 300D better, but his reasoning is that he's had it for longer and just likes the quality of Canon cameras better.

From what I can see they're very similar, you'd be happy with either.
