I had been tempted to get one of these done.

Apparently my room and me in general can be a bit of a biohazard sometimes.

    Now there's an idea....

A lot of people seem to be doing the upper back these days. Can't see the point in getting something done if you can't see it.

    Perhaps the upper arm?

Either that or somewhere around the scrote area might be a nice warning

I've got a phoenix on the right side of my chest and a dragon on the left side. I designed them both and don't regret them (yet).

It's funny cos my Mum hates bikes but my Dad loves them so he helped me get my bike but my Dad hates tattoos and my Mum likes them so she helped me get my tattoos

From personal experience tats don't hurt all that much, but it is a personal thing. If you're not particularly concerned by getting scratched then it's ok. It's not so bad that it really hurts for ages. I got mine done after a few years 'research' and procrastination but in saying that I also wanted the right one for me. I have a fairly standard band around my upper arm but it goes all the way around and it's a design that has meaning for me. Yes, it was a bit tender under the arm on the soft stuff but not so bad that I'd not have another done. I went to Roger's Tattoo art in upper Cuba St Wellington and he (Roger) is/was a legend.
Getting a tattoo covers the whole spectrum of attitudes, both for and against. There are the "Oh shit I got that when I was drunk??" to "This tattoo is a reflection of how I see myself and how I see the world...."
"It's permanent, you know" and "What the F*ck did you do that to yourself for?" My mother and father's reactions respectively. Tattoos are not permanent these days but my view is that in getting one you approach it as though they are.
Tattoos are one of the more contentious forms of body art in that the appreciation of them is highly subjective, much like motorbikes - some like some don't. Personally I don't give a flying F*ck who dislikes or likes my tattoo, I do and that's what counts.

    Where will it go

Ok - so when I finally figure on the design, it will go on my right hip flexor. I have a nice big muscle mass under there and it is my own private thing... so that would be cool.

either that or on a calf... but really - on the hip flexor

Some tips for getting a tattoo

    Should I get a tattoo?
    - There is no universal answer to this question. Really, it just depends on whether you want one.
How painful is getting a tattoo?
    - Although there is some pain involved since tattoos are made by a needle piercing your skin, most tattoos are not too painful and most people can tolerate the mild pain pretty easily.
    Find a good tattoo artist:
    - Probably the best way to find a good artist is to ask around. If any of your friends have tattoos you really like, ask who did them. I even asked people in the street - if their tattoos were showing. The artist's workshop should be clean, that is a must. They will preferably wear rubber gloves, have a good supply of clean sterilised (autoclaved) needles, and enough light to see what they're doing. Just about all artists will have flash books or previous work displayed and this will help you judge whether you like their work. ie. linework, use of shading, colours etc. Never let a tattooist tell you what you want to get - it's your tattoo not theirs.
    How much do tattoos cost?
    - It depends on exactly what type of tattoo you’re getting and how big it is. Mine is approximately 2 1/2 inches wide and goes all the way around my upper arm and cost $250. A good artist will be able to give you a fairly close estimate beforehand. Time is money and big things take more time than little things, unless they're very intricate. There is a limit to how intricate you can get, remember your skin is elastic so small complicated designs may not have the impact you desire.
Where should I get a tattoo?
    - At a good clean tattoo artist's workshop!! (No joke) You can get a tattoo on any part of your body it's up to you. Be aware though, that your skin's elasticity could change over time and your tattoo's appearance may change alot because of that. If you're going to be in a position that has a visual character component to it ie. face to face sales of some sort, then your choice of design and location may be an issue. There are people who will judge you by your tattoos alone.

I've got a half-sleeve Japanese-inspired koi that I started about 4 years ago. Quite a few hours in it, and a few more to go.

Some say they don't hurt but it does depend on the person, where it is going, and how long you spend under the needle. Try getting a bit done close to your armpit or the around the tricep. That can tickle a bit.

In Auckland my recommendation is Monique at http://www.eurotattoo.co.nz (Lincoln Rd). That's who I see. Her daughter works there as well as her partner. They are great if you want to get an older piece freshened up, reworked, or even covered. Don't expect anything fancy for "fiddy dollars" though.

No removal system is without it's drawbacks. Some colours (certain yellows for example) can actually darken under some laser treatments (see http://tinyurl.com/9j7fj ). Get enough coverage and your only options are going to involve a scalpel - and maybe a saw.

In addition to Colapop's advice and links above, there is lots of good safe advice in FAQs from rec.arts.bodyart (see http://www.rabbithole.org/faqpage.html). (see second half of page). Put a flame-proof suit on if you want to join in the discussions.

I have four tattoos now all of which i have designed myself with something of importance to me, and who i am as a person. I think it is important to make sure that its something that you will be proud off in years to come, not one that was spurr off the moment and you will regret 10years down the track.
As for the pain, you forget it quick enough when you see the finished product.

Mum was always opposed to my younger brother getting tats (possibly the subject matter coloured her judgement) but when I finally hit on a design that I was prepared to carry on my body for the rest of my life (I held off for a long time so as not to rashly do something I would regret later) and got it done she said "Oh, that's a nice design."

I have plans for another but I'm waiting until I have the money spare. Truly spare - I won't be getting it done until such time as I don't have more important things to spend the money on.

I have no preconceptions about tattoos - I've seen the most demure looking women with tattoos. One I've met, her tattoos are clearly visible when she's wearing short sleeves. She is well spoken and works as a radiologist - not exactly the stereotypical "chick with a tattoo". Recent tattoos, too, not "Oh yeah, when I was young and foolish."

The pain is something you can think past, I simply went to my happy place and chilled out and relaxed, the more you fear the pain the more you feel it.
