The Glenorchy Rally 2006

So I hussled back towards Glenorchy. Fast. Thinking my mate Pete was probably having fits by now (correct). On the seal agin I saw two bikes with gear on going the other way. Full emergency brake. U turn. Drag race back to catch up with them. JUST managed to see them turn off at the right road. So I blasted up that, and BEHOLD! There was the rally. Very OBVIOUS it was from this road. Eh Rashika/ FlyingDutchMan.

What??? We took off down the right road and just before a bridge stoppped to let a car and a few dirt bikes past. Kept going down the road which did progressively get worse and worse. Eventually we got a ford which I went straight through. I looked in the mirror and couldn't see Rashika anywhere. Fearing the she'd binned the buell in the ford I stopped and looked around. She'd decided not to go through the ford, but stopped to ask directions (who does that anyway?) from some people frolicking there.

Decided that it was wrong direction and went back. On the way back a few larger bikes passed us (see - we weren't the only ones to miss the turn off). We got there and the rally site was noticeable. We'd missed it on the way up because the small sign hapeened to be hidden by a SUV.

BTW Sniper, you would have got the prize but FlyingDutchMan wouldn't let me drag your bike up and down the gravel road on its side behind my H-D and he wouldn't let me slash the shit out of your bike seat with me big " (Crocodile Dundee voiced: "Now that's what I call a knife") knife so it didn't end up quite rough enough for the prize..

Clean it? Nah I just went so fast all the dirt fell off . It was quite dirty - Dirt roads, fords, bug splatter, etc. I cleaned most of it off, except for the excess chain lube on the rear wheel. Did you notice I even lubed the chain?

Yep, lovely weekend in Central Otago. Great run up to Glenorchy, hadn't been up that way for a while, and it was my first time doing it on a bike. Rode like a granny all the way, and even slower on the way back with an off-colour pillion.

We slipped away back to Cromwell early on Sat evening - Mrs V was feeling decidedly unwell (too much sun and not enough alcohol I reckon). Sunburn - I stayed covered up most of the day, but forgot my ears - I now have blisters along the tops of both ears!

Great to meet the guys from up north, and other local guys not previously met - nice people. Sorry we didn't spend more time with you, we spent most of the weekend catching up with family, and letting Mrs V try out her new "toy" on those lovely roads around Cromwell.

Next time we'll be more organised.

Phaedrus mate, where did you get to? I waited at Frankton as per plan but never saw you again so had a solo ride home.

you can blame that on my complete lack of navigation ability and bad memory. It was possibly in frankton where I was trying to remember where you wanted to meet, actually I think it's a small miracle that i even made it to the rally.

on the way back I realised I took a wrong turn somewhere when I didn't recognise the hills in the distance

Rather than turn on my small miracle device (gps) I decided there was no better way to learn to navagate than to get home from lost.

I was lucky enough to win a prize in the Bike show at the Rally - best japanese in show - unfortunately it wasn't best Jap Bike at the rally

What a great turn out and meeting of KB. Great ride down, and quite quick in places. I did enjoy the scenery Qtown to Glenorchy and so didn't notice TonyB. Great rally location, about 500 all up so smallish.

Woke, packed ans then saw it was 7am on Sunday so Cal and I got away early and met up with Mrs and Miss Cal in Qtown, missing the heavy rain. Fine from there. Chai latte in Cromill was SWEEEET. Passed the tin man (two arms intact) and cruised home- tacking in places across Mackenzie country. Sore bum from Ashburton. Great trip all round. No issues with bike, new tyre (they almost last for ever eh Jantar), or speed traps. Nice to meet some more names.

A few other points that weren't noted. Great band... unusual song selection at times though...

Now, as was mentioned earlier a few other prizes were won by KB members:
SuzyQ's R6- best Jap, Rashikas XB12R- best American, D's tractor- best Italian. Quite impressive really. But a bit... odd. Wouldn't you say? It dawned on me riding home yesterday that there could be more to this than meets the eye. A conspiracy perhaps? Hmmm. Did any one mention that all three left the proceedings early in the evening to get some rest. I also seem to recall that the judges dissapeared for a while. Infact, the wet T comp was held VERY late- some time after the proud best bike winners had dissapeared. Is it possible that the judges were bribed in some way? Snipers bike (ridden by FlyingDutchMan) should have won the rat bike award, BUT FlyingDutchMan did NOT dissapear mysteriously. Draw from this what you will, but I suspect foul play... or would that be foreplay? The judges certainly seemed upbeat when they returned

And speaking of the Wet T comp. It deserves a mention. The winner got $600 prize, and the rules were if they removed there shirts they were disqualified, so it was the first actual wet T comp I have seen. Never fear- they had a bare breasted comp later. Did I mention that the young lass who won the Wet T had a rare skill- by merely wiggling her shoulders she could get one jubblie rotating clockwise, and the other rotating counter clockwise Don't think it was practiced either. Very impressive!

Really enjoyed catching up with so many KB members.
At this end of the country you read about the adventures of the northerners when they get together and wonder what it would be like. **sigh**
I had only ever met two before and half of those was Scumdog (the other was Zooter).

I was feeling a bit pissed off about the 888 and must have looked like I was riding like an idiot through the gorge when normally I only ride like a tosser, but it wasn't my fault honestly.
I think I've figured out the problem and hopefully I'll get a chance to try out my theory this weekend.
So I'm not quite so sulky now.

Luckily I had another Ducati that I'd prepared earlier so had no problem getting to the rally.

Got stuck at a Happy Hour that went on for about three before I caught up with most of the guys in the Pig & Whistle and ended up drinking with the Bike Mikes (who aren't actually KB members yet I understand) and playing pool against some hot European chicks (and whuppin' their arses - yeeeahh!).
Everyone else seemed to go to bed early - I dunno.

The next day I took my daughter to the Lake Hayes A&P show and didn't actually get to the rally site until after 7 - the sun was going down and it was getting cooold!

Anyway, good fun drinking & generally carousing until the bar shut and everyone went to bed and it proceeded to rain all night.
Woke up the next morning about 10.30 and we were just about the only tent left still up.

Ran into the Bike Mikes at the Glenorchy pub for brekky and then we went back to Arrowtown for a beer and split up for home.

Most enjoyable and I'm keen to catch up with you all again.
