    I don't think that's a silly suggestion.
I spent quite a bit of time in and around the Pacific Islands so have some knowledge of them.
I'm way out of date now though I suppose. Cheers John.

An admirable, if slightly narrow-minded, view.

But who's to say that it's invalid to consider all residents of the South Pacific as one nation?

The islands that we happen to have had the luck to be born on are the only ones with reasonable natural resources and size. So be it. Am I to devote a small portion of my life's work to helping a hard-luck teenager in Alexandra and a single mum of two in Henderson, but not a family of four in Apia with a dad who can't find a job?

Obviously one must draw the line somewhere, and assign an equitable division of responsibility amongst the population of the world who have excess resources at their disposal. I can't save the starving millions of Africa.

But, given the choice, I'll err on the side of generosity.

Then again, what would I know? I'm pissed. And now you've got me all misty-eyed about the people who can't afford to drink Marlborough sauvignon blanc whenever they feel the urge.

Lush, yes, at least in terms of palm trees and bush and whatnot. Capable of supporting proper agriculture? Not really.

It's not only the PI people though, there are many countries that NZ tax payers support through donations ie. the tsunami affected countries full of terrorists in waiting like Indonesia.

I actually do agree with you though, if there is no money for internal aid then why support other countries? I would sponsor a "Save the Children" child but I have two at home who require my support first. When I no longer need to support them, then I will help elsewhere.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
