Gearing for my GSXR 400!

Having trouble getting the right gearing for my GSXR 400 race bike. Have a 15 on the front and a 44 on the back with a standard chain. Wanting to fit a 15 front and 43/42 on the back with a 520 chain but told i can only get 13 front 42 back. Does anybody know if i can get a 15 for a 520 chain made up.Like to get it fitted for the KB track day if poss. cheers Torque.

Anything you can do with a front sprocket, you can do with a rear, just a little more work.

Your 1st post is confusing Torque. It says you have a 15T front but want to get a 15T front. What's it gonna be? And as for only 13T being available, BULSHIT. I know a man that removed a 14T on Sunday last week from a Gixxer 4.

OK torque, get a 13T front and a few 520 pitch blanks for the rear in differing sizes. Each track will require a different rear sprocket but for a man of your talents, that shouldn't pose too much of a problem. You'll also want to change the gearing between wet and dry races.

What exactly is a 520 chain and the advantages?
I hear them talked about alot but never did really understand the difference.

520 is a lighter chain so less drag /weight etc etc
ohh for those that dont know --specs on chains work like this.
the first number is the pitch (distance between pins measured along the chain)
the second two numbers refer to the width of the chain

The only real point or advantage of changing from a 525 set up to a 520 on a GSXR400 is the range of sprocket size's available in the 520. It is massive compared to 525.

In 520 you can get at least 13, 14 and 15 front and pretty much anything from 42 to 48 rear (probably alot more)

Torque, is your bike an SP?? What year is it and has it had any work done to the motor??

Standard is 14/44

Depending on you and your bike, Manfield; 14/44 is great. Taupo 13/44 and Pukekohe is just trial and error til you find a good combination for you. Possibly 15 front, maybe 45 + rear.

Best way is just to go to a 520 set up, buy lots of different size sprockets and play around with it til you find what feels good for you.
