He'll get convicted and all his supporters will crow about the racist judge and court. God help us if someone gives Maori their own court.

The BMWOR are planning a trip there next year (we're not going, we used to live in Otaki so we've had enough of this kind of behaviour!) - maybe I should suggest they keep their helmets on and visors down until the natives indicate whether they are friendly or not?
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

Guess it had to happen sometime, what do you expect if you turn a tradition into a zoo. If they want to get paid to do traditional things, they better do it if the tourist is smilling or not. If this was a performing dog and it bit someone, the dog was put down. Tamaki Brothers are jerks.
I thought the Hongi was something you did with a smile? a friendship thing. Or am i wrong there - cos all my mates smile and i smile when we great each other.

The Dutchman should have countered the maori tradition with the correct European tradition and shot his arse with a muzzle loader.

He smacked someone over, who'd paid for the privilege and expectation of an interesting and enlightening day out.

One Dutch tourist smacked over, and an opportunity for Collective Maori culture to impress the validity of their lifestyle and belief system on someone who'd never experienced it, or never imagined that it existed as it does, lost.

By the third hand re-telling back home in the Netherlands, 100,000 people will have heard about it.

The world has moved on since the challenge ceremony was used a valid way to impress visitors from other tribes. It is nothing more than a ceremonial display now. Soccer used to be a post battle victory game, and the ball was the head of the chief loser. You may or may not have noticed, that we now use an artificial head.

i agree with you, but understand i do not believe it was his fault. it was the tamaki brothers for putting that tourist in tha sistuation. he should not have been placed there.
it is hard really really hard not to take it seriously when doing a challenge.

it sucks, it should never have happened. the tourism operators were idiots.

should be able to show tourists from the out side not from the first point of view. not to be living it. that is different.
the maori culture was never interesting, it was violent courrptive and hard. only in the last 200 years has it changed.
its a new culture that is trying to commericalise itself.
the tourisum operators have to keep people at bay.
The Tamaki brothers aren't at fault. The guy who smacked the tourist is. That's the kind of waffle that has allowed the 4th generation of welfare dependant kiwis to emerge.

"It's not my fault, it's cultural."

Come on TIE you can do better than that.

The last time I was on a marae isn't any of your business, really, but it was longer than it should have been.

I might be 40 but I had a fairly comprehensive introduction to Te Reo and Tikanga Maori, and I led the first school marae challenge for an "integrated" kapa haka group when I was 10. The last time I was on a marae was for Toby Rikihana's Tangi, the chap that introduced Te Reo to NZ Primary schools. He was an inspirational person, and he would have been the first person to thrust a taiaha up the rectum of the wally that head butted the tourist.

There is no excuse for violence.

    None.

After reading through this thread I totally agree with you Jim2. I was brought up with the same chances as anyone else in this country, maori or otherwise. In fact I probably had less, but I'm doing ok. I don't need to rely on a cultural excuse for poor behaviour. I was taught in Wairoa by 'Maori' people (who are f*cking good people) that there is a protocol for all things and being disrespectful towards people who obviously don't know your customs shows your lack of respect for your own culture (as a maori). It is about Mana. Which is not only pride but also respect. That idiot should get thrown in jail for assault.
The problem is that too many people want to close the door aftyer they've got here. They forget really quickly that that's what's made NZ what it is. The diverse range of cultures and people working together to make this country a great place to be.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

    The guy didn't deserve it.

A grin was an insult, yes (who cares). What are we going to do? Run round twakking anyone and everyone who isn't sensitive when it comes to a different culture? .............Shall I headbutt someone for shaking my hand rather than touching noses? :spudwhat:

    A headbutt is assault.

Yes but it is "not their culture". Unless they have read up on it they would not know. Or unless they have had it fully explained to them. Just like how there are LOTS of things that I did not know, things that I have done that would have been insulting to certain cultures. Was it done intentionally? No.

No mistake. The only mistake was made by the person who felt the need to let head meet someones face. There was no need for violence.

Well, that's unfortunate - I was hoping for a public debate. You cowards that can't voice your opinions in public need to think carefully about how that makes you look to the universe.

TIE has been eloquent and respectful and didn't deserve that kind of crap.

TIE I'm sorry if that happened because I tried pushing that line of debate.

Abuse isn't free speech, and censorship could also be called bullying by PM. Very disappointing.

My ancestors were Vikings. If I'm reading this right I can rape your women, pillage your house and burn it to the ground and if you try to stop me I can gut you with a big fucking axe then claim it's my cultural heritage and you were being offensive?

    Cool.
Remember to never split an infinitive. The passive voice should never be used. Do not put statements in the negative form. Proofread carefully to see if you words out. And don't start a sentence with a conjugation. (William Safire)
